She is playing on a different plane at the moment, the England all-rounder.

She is playing like someone who has gone to the bat shop and got one that is twice as wide as everyone else.

    Pressure? What pressure?

Nat Sciver drives Kapp gloriously through extra cover for her third boundary.

There is something quite calming about the fact that it is do or die for England right now. They've got to get through this tough passage of play into South Africa's first change bowlers and then try and capitalise.

If they do lose another couple of wickets, they're kind of out of this tournament.

  4. Eng 34-2published at 9 overs

Sciver also finishes the over with a boundary as Khaka drops short once again but this time it's pulled emphatically on the leg side.

South Africa will not want to release any of the pressure that they've built up through their openers. But that's not a great start.

  5. Eng 28-2published at 8.1 overs

Don't bowl short to Nat Sciver.

Ayabonga Khaka replaces Shabnim Ismail and it's a bit of a pie first up that Sciver can crunch past point for four.

Can England capitalise on South Africa's less threatening bowlers?

Here's how England lost their first wicket - the gamble of promoting Danni Wyatt to open not paying off today.

It's an excellent spell, it's just the control. The line with just a hint of movement and it is challenging both edges.

  8. Eng 24-2published at 8 overs

It's all about survival at this stage for Beaumont and Sciver, and building a foundation, particularly against Kapp.

    Another maiden.

  9. Not outpublished at 01:34 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2022

You could fit a bus through the gap between Beaumont's bat and the ball, so a bizarrely wasted review.

  10. South Africa reviewpublished at 01:33 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2022

    Oh.

South Africa have reviewed that play and a miss, thinking Beaumont may have nicked it. There was barely an appeal, so this is odd.

  11. Eng 24-2published at 7.2 overs

Marizanne Kapp is causing England's batters a lot of uncertainty. Tammy Beaumont almost gets herself out in the exact same manner as Heather Knight before playing and missing at a beauty outside her off stump.

    Nervy times.

    Beaumont 10, Sciver 1

Nat Sciver hit a stunning century in a losing cause against Australia in their opening fixture.

The same but in a win would be rather helpful for England today.

I think Heather Knight initially thought she could play at the ball and then has decided to leave it. But the chances of that hitting the edge of your bat when the edge is facing the bowler - that is incredibly unlucky.

That's sloppy, I think. The ball is another set of stumps outside off. I know she is trying to leave it but her bat is so far away from her body. She has withdrawn it far too late, it was a flirtation that didn't need to be there.

Marizanne Kapp's eyes tell you all you need to know about how she's feeling today. Let's just say I would not fancy facing her right now.

Then again, I can't bat to save my life.

Thankfully, Nat Sciver, the new batter, can.

Heather Knight looks furious with herself. The ball is about sixth stump, she has gone to leave the ball. That is a really unfortunate way to get out, playing on trying to leave.

    Knight b Kapp 9 (Eng 19-2)

    Wow. Huge wicket.

Having just said South Africa needed a couple more scalps, England are under significant early pressure and it's Marizanne Kapp leading the way.

She's been testing Knight with consistent line and length on off stump, and England's captain is bowled off the inside edge of her bat while trying to leave the ball.

It just feels like the conditions are crying out for someone to make a hundred today.

  20. Eng 17-1published at 5 overs

An excellent maiden from Shabnim Ismail.

It looks a very good day for batting - South Africa are going to need to take a couple more early wickets to justify their decision to bowl first. And this partnership of Beaumont and Knight is a huge one for England.
