The end of a day England had dominated up until about an hour ago.

    A bemusing, baffling day.

All over. Michael Gough flicks the bails off and that is day one done.

What a day it has been too - 17 wickets have fallen. England trail New Zealand by 16 runs.

    Where do we even start?

    Three threes in the over!

Ben Foakes picks up three through gully before Stuart Broad steers through the slips. A beautiful back-foot punch brings Foakes three more through the covers.

Broad and Foakes are up to all sorts to try and make this the last over. Kane Williamson is muttering under his breath and has brought out the double teapot.

Here's how England captain Ben Stokes fell...

A couple of leg byes push England a little bit closer to New Zealand.

    Probably two overs to go.

Short from Trent Boult and it whistles past Stuart Broad's left ear and a mile over Tom Blundell's head for four byes.

England will take them however they come at the moment.

There's a reason why England haven't won any Tests for so long. It wasn't management or the captain. It was the players and in particular the batting department.

Ben Foakes sees out a maiden from Tim Southee.

He almost strangled down the leg side and had a prod at one outside off stump too.

You can't blame the surface for all of this.

Stuart Broad sees out the final ball of Trent Boult's over. He only arrived in the country from the IPL on Monday!

Here's how Joe Root and Alex Lees got out. They started the 5-8 collapse.

This is joint third most wickets on the first day of a Lord's Test. There were 20 on day one of the Ireland Test in 2019.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 32.5 overs

    Potts c Mitchell b Boult 0 (Eng 100-7)

England have lost a seventh! The short ball does for Matty Potts.

It is shorter from Trent Boult, but it gets up to chest height at best, and Potts starts to crouch up, scared by the pace and threat of the ball, and it flicks off the glove and loops up for a simple catch for Daryl Mitchell at slip.

Has anyone checked how watertight Brendon McCullum's contract is? He might want out after this.

Matty Potts, who we last saw going off the field with cramp earlier, is the new batter.

It's maybe a good job that Matty Parkinson has made it to the ground...

It looked like the ball didn't quite arrive to Bairstow. He was through his shot early and dragged it back onto the stumps.

    Bairstow b Boult 1 (Eng 100-6)

    ANOTHER! England have lost 6-41!

Wide from Trent Boult and Jonny Bairstow looks to slap it away but a thick inside edge crashes into the stumps.

Please can we see Brendon McCullum into the changing room?
