I just think if Vince had been allowed to bed into Test cricket at five/six then promoted to three, his career could be completely different. And allow Pope, a middle order batter, to bat where he should!

A massive appeal by Tim Southee and some of his New Zealand colleagues as Joe Root gets caught on the back foot.

There was a clear edge, but did it flick the pad first? It did. But after a conflab New Zealand opt against the review. Wisely, because it was going over the top of the stumps.

Good from New Zealand and Kane Williamson to not get drawn into the "it's Joe Root, though" pressure.

Pope was a lot less frenetic today. I know it was only seven but he looked more controlled. In the past he has looked like a cat on a hot tin roof. He looked good. He will be disappointed to be out fending in the channel.

Here's how Ollie Pope got out.

Another frailty exposed by New Zealand. They've done their homework.

    Four more!

Short and wide from Colin de Grandhomme and Alex Lees slaps away a cut shot for his second boundary. That's a lovely shot.

Lees is up to 25 off 72 balls.

Matt Parkinson has arrived at Lord's.

He'll be hoping he's got his feet up for most of, if not all of, tomorrow.

New Zealand will be happy with the match-up. They like Jamieson against Root, a tall bowler moving the ball away. He can get nicked off, especially early on.

Four more for Joe Root. It's slightly edgy, but we've seen him do that so often, as he guides wide of the slips and away down the hill for four.

Root is closing in on 10,000 Test runs by the way. He went into the game 111 away - 102 to go.

We reckon if he gets there in the first three days he'll be younger than Sir Alastair Cook and the fourth day will be tie.

It was short, it was wide, but Root has played that gloriously.

It wasn't really a cut but a back foot drive and he has timed it perfectly.

    Rooooot!

Batting for the first time since giving up the Test captaincy after England's defeat in West Indies in March, Joe Root is off the mark first ball with a back-foot punch through the covers for four.

    Trademark Root.

I've asked the video team to provide us with some stills of Alex Lees' stance because he's taking an off-stump guard and shuffling further and further across. The two images below show you what we're talking about.

He works a single - his first run in 23 balls - into the leg side.

Pope got done for length a bit there. He was on the back foot defending fifth/sixth stump and had a little nibble on it.

It was pretty well bowled though to be fair.

    A thin feather behind!

Ollie Pope has fallen foul to the Lord's slope as he has a little nibble at a Kyle Jamieson delivery and a very thin edge is caught by Tom Blundell.

Pope was perhaps done a little bit for length - he could have come forward, rather than looking to play it away on the back foot.

We're back under way after drinks with Ollie Pope facing up to Kyle Jamieson.

An intriguing hour and 10 minutes remain.

Colin de Grandhomme returns for New Zealand and Alex Lees is immediately taking his guard on off stump, exposing leg stump again.

He twice gets beaten on the outside edge before coming two steps down the track to block out the end of the over.

Time for a beverage. Bet there's been a few of those sunk around the country today.

    Oh, lovely.

Ollie Pope leans into a drive and he picks up his first boundary as the ball races away down the hill.

Hmmm. The third umpire decides there a little nick on it from Ollie Pope.

Hard to tell really. On the main camera it didn't look like he had but there is a squiggle on snicko.
