If Brendon McCullum wasn't aware of the scale of the job he'd taken on then the last 18 overs has probably explained it.
England were 59-0 - they are now 98-5.
There's a huge appeal for caught behind again as Ben Foakes looks to flick away. Michael Gough shakes his head and I think that's a good call and it glanced off the pad instead.

The pitch is doing just enough for the bowler. It just deviated enough. Southee has been excellent since his initial burst. England just have to get through this now. It is not a time to bat positively. They have to soak up the pressure.

With 25 minutes to play on the first day the 15th wicket has fallen.
Stokes c Blundell b Southee 1 (Eng 98-5)
Another one! Ben Stokes has gone. England have lost 5-39.
The England captain plants his front foot forward and has a big booming drive and the ball just does enough to draw a very thin edge and go through to Tom Blundell behind the stumps.
He holds the shot - it is a hold of disappointment. It turns to anger as he walks off.
Welcome back to cricket everyone.

If the ball nipping everywhere I can understand batting so far outside off stump as Lees was. You try to knock a bowler off his stride.
But it looks a fairly decent wicket. You have to be so good not to miss one ball. If he was batting normally that would have gone down leg.

Ben Stokes scores his first run as England Test captain with a nudge off his hips into square leg. There's a cheer from the crowd.
There are still 17 overs left in the day, but we've only got till 18:30. We're going to lose quite a few overs tonight.

You have to admire the way New Zealand play cricket: no panicking; just playing their game, seemingly without any concern for their first innings failings. I wouldn't be surprised if they come back to win this game.

Captain Ben Stokes is at the crease now. I imagine 45 minutes or so he was thinking he might not be needed today.
But he is. England have him and Jonny Bairstow, both yet to get off the mark in the middle now.
This feels like a really important 30 minutes or so until close.

England have lost 4-37 in the last 16 overs.

England are under a bit of pressure now after dominating the day's play.
Lees lbw b Southee 25 (Eng 96-4)
Smashing into the top of leg stump!
Hmmmm. There will be questions about Alex Lees' off-stump guard and technique here because if he was taking a usual middle/leg stump guard he probably easily defends this ball.
He is so far across that the ball was always likely to be hitting the stumps.
England have lost four wickets for 37 runs. Welcome, Brendon.

It looks a good shout.

This is the danger of batting so far outside off stump. It is so high risk.
It doesn't look like it is sliding down...
Height may save him, but it seems unlikely.
Is Alex Lees out?
Michael Gough says yes to Tim Southee's lbw appeal but after a brief chat with Jonny Bairstow, Lees sends it upstairs.

Greg Double: There was a big stump mic sigh from Root as soon as he hit that...because he didn't have to. Again, all England batsman out to shots that were never hitting the stumps.
Mark Burt: Every wicket in England’s innings so far has been a giveaway. New management, same old product.

England pick up four leg byes as Jonny Bairstow looks to tickle fine.
The Yorkshireman has gone from the West Indies to the IPL to these Test matches so he's played an awful lot of cricket in the last few months.
We might see him rested for some of the limited-overs games in July.

That was a great catch by Tim Southee. It went quickly.
It was a mistake from Root but one of those where as a batter you say "that is one of my shots. I just didn't execute it".
Root c Southee b de Grandhomme 11 (Eng 92-3)
Gone! Joe Root, in his first innings since relinquishing the captaincy, goes cheaply.
Root's trademark back-foot punch is his downfall today. He times it well, but Tim Southee takes an excellent catch at gully.
New Zealand are forcing a mini fightback here. Make some plans for Monday - I doubt there will be a Test on.
