What a start for England and Ben Stokes.
This captaincy stuff is easy.

This is the first time Matthew Potts has ever bowled in a red-ball game at Lord's. He must be loving it.
Twenty-seven for FIVE!

I think Mitchell was late on that. The bat isn't out far enough so the ball has effectively run down the inside of the bat and onto the stumps. He wasn't quite ready for that stroke.
Excellent from Potts though.
Mitchell b Potts 13 (NZ 27-5)
Matthew Potts has another! He bangs the ball in and despite it not being the quickest delivery, Daryl Mitchell has played it onto his stumps.
Potts has two wickets for six runs inside five overs on debut.
So then. Where is Matt Parkinson? I hope he has his phone on.
Breaking news from the England camp...
Jack Leach has been ruled out of the rest of the Test.
He has symptoms of concussion after his tumble in the outfield earlier in the day.
England will be able to replace him with a concussion substitute.

Stokes has not had to do too much really. It hasn't been a difficult morning for his captaincy.
Catches have been held, which is important.
Tom Blundell has opened for New Zealand in the past which is handy given the situation his side find themselves in. He's opted for the long-sleeved shirt whereas Mitchell is in the short-sleeved one.

Mitchell 9, Blundell 4
Ben Stokes is continuing to move his fielders here and there in the sunshine. He has a quiet word with Durham team-mate Potts between deliveries but nothing too much. He must think this captaincy stuff is easy.

James Anderson is 2-4 from six overs with five maidens - including his first four.
It is only the fourth time in 308 innings he has opened with four successive maidens and the second time he has taken two wickets in that spell, after a 2007 Test against India at The Oval.
Stuart Broad almost gets his second as Mitchell slices the ball off an edge to fourth slip on the bounce. The camera pans to Stokes who currently resembles a proud big brother.
Daryl Mitchell whips another boundary off his toes later in the over. Scoring really has been a struggle for the Kiwis.

It's been a combination of tidy bowling, with have seen bowling like this from these bowlers before, on a helpful surface with a new ball.
It is a morning which demanded watchful defence and good judgement from whoever was battling. That's what was required, but we have not seen any of that from New Zealand.
They look rusty. They are playing balls at sixth or seventh stump that they don't need to.
More tidy bowling from Potts who is hitting the pitch hard rather than trying to hoop the ball around. Think more Pat Cummins than James Anderson.
His pace isn't as high as Cummins but he does fire down a yorker at 85mph in this over, his second maiden out of three.
Here's how Matthew Potts claimed his first Test wicket. He only went and got Kane Williamson...
Mitchell 5, Blundell 3
Tom Blundell is New Zealand's number six, one of the less familiar names in this New Zealand line-up. The right-hander has replaced BJ Watling, who retired last year, as the Black Caps wicketkeeper.
He flicks Broad off his hip for a couple.
I'm still slightly surprised every time I type out the score here.

Matthew Potts is charging in with a frown on his face. He looks an athlete and has the sides of his hair cut short like a Peaky Blinder.
He beats the bat twice more in his second over, both deliveries nearly perfect.

It might be something, it might be nothing, but this is what Stuart Broad told the media earlier this week...
“Brendon has come into the bowling group and said ‘don’t focus too much on economy rates, I want wickets, let’s try to get as many wickets as we can, as quickly as possible.
"'Let’s have the mindset of where can I get an extra slip or short leg from, rather then being too defensive.’
“That’s something the bowlers will have to implement.”
Contrast that to Joe Root complaining they didn’t bowl full enough in Adelaide. Interesting.
Potts continues after drinks...
