There was probably just one bad ball I can remember in that hour. Every other delivery was asking questions, with just enough movement.

An exceptional start for England. You can't win a Test match in the first hour but you can go a long way to get ahead of the game and England have done that.

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

This is England's third-best start when bowling first in any Test match. They had India 8-4 in their first innings at Old Trafford in 2014 and Australia 11-4 in Melbourne in 1911.

    NZ 12-4published at 11 overs

Jimmy Anderson changes ends and yes, you guessed it, it's another maiden.

    That is drinks.

Quite the first hour for England. 12 runs. Four wickets.

  5. NZ 12-4published at 10 overs

Potts is loving it. He's given a big ovation as he heads down to the boundary at the end of the over.

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

A magnificent start from Matty Potts. All his deliveries have been on the money.

What a way to get off and running. Instantly he will settle down now and he can just play the game of cricket.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 9.5 overs

    Williamson c Foakes b Potts 2 (NZ 14-4)

MATTHEW POTTS GETS KANE WILLIAMSON IN HIS FIRST OVER.

The 23-year-old from Sunderland leaps in the air in delight, Ben Stokes following not too far behind. It was just nibbling outside off and Williamson nicked through to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes.

    What. A. Start.

  8. NZ 12-3published at 9.1 overs

83mph and outside off from Potts to start. Williamson lets it go. A decent start.

  9. Postpublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

Off comes Matty Potts' cap. He's going to have his first bowl for England. Skipper Stokes comes in and gives him a pat on the back and he has Stuart Broad for advice too.

    Williamson on strike...

  10. NZ 12-3published at 9 overs

Ben Stokes now has five slips and has stuck himself in at leg slip. If this first 50 minutes is anything to go by the Stokes-McCullum era is going to be an attacking one.

Official Source: Does Jonny Bairstow get to keep the ball now?

  12. NZ 12-3published at 8.2 overs

Jimmy Anderson has conceded a run! Four of them in fact. He drifts too straight this time and Daryl Mitchell whips him to the fence.

  13. Postpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's a diving Jonny Bairstow...

    Sir Alastair Cook

Very decisive from Ben Stokes there. Everyone was looking around and straight away at mid-off he said no.

Quite clearly he had the best view in the house.

  15. NZ 8-3published at 8 overs

    Williamson 2, Mitchell 1

All eyes are on captain Ben Stokes, one of the few fielders not in the slips, now as England consider a review for a caught behind. Broad didn't really fancy it which probably means it's not out.

Stokes shakes his head before coming in for a chat with the bowler at the end of the over.

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It's all happening for Jonny Bairstow at third slip. It was a very hard catch made to look easy.

This is brilliant bowling from Stuart Broad, using the angles of the slope. Devon Conway will look at the replay and think he shouldn't have played at it as it was fifth stump. But with the angle of the slope as a left-hander you feel you feel you have to play at it.

  17. Postpublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

With Henry Nicholls out injured, Daryl Mitchell is in a position higher than New Zealand would like. England are well on top.

  18. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

    Conway c Bairstow b Broad 3 (NZ 7-3)

Bairstow is at it again! He has a hat-trick within 40 minutes of play.

This time Stuart Broad finds Devon Conway's edge and Bairstow is able to take a regulation catch.

England's new era could not have started any better.

    Isa Guha
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

This is wonderful artistry from James Anderson.

  20. NZ 7-2published at 11:39 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

Jimmy Anderson has the ball on the proverbial string. One swings in, the next out. Anderson looks like he can put it wherever he likes.

Four overs in and the 39-year-old has not conceded a run.
