It's all a bit quiet out there at the moment. Not much noise coming from the England fielders.

Tom Latham is struck on the pads and Matthew Potts, unconvincingly, asks the question. A clear inside edge and a review isn't even up for debate.

Latham ends the over with a beautiful drive for four. Time for drinks.

I'm getting some heat for saying this is a 'northern' Test. I know Nottingham isn't strictly in the North (I'm from Stoke, so know all about the sensitivity around what is described as the Midlands). However, for these purposes I'm saying Northern to describe the major grounds north of London - here, Edgbaston, Headingley and Old Trafford. All different, but with similarities when it comes to the atmosphere and feel of a Test. Can we move on now?

A poor delivery from Broad. It sits up nicely for Will Young to swivel on the spot and pull for a boundary.

A change of ends now for Stuart Broad. He went for 17 from his first four overs.

It's an important phase of play for New Zealand - as it always at the start of a Test match. I think both sides are slightly stronger bowling so not surprising they wanted to bowl first. Tom Latham is a like a flower bud ready to blossom.

Will Young, meanwhile, is working hard. Young is really a middle order batter who has promoted to open. He is is someone who is more used to looking for line, and less for length. A natural opener will be looking to let it go more than play.

There's a bit of a debate in the office as to where we stand on carrot cakes. Ffion - a carrot cake hater - is getting quite heated.

It's looking quite comfortable for New Zealand as Tom Latham scores consecutive boundaries off Matthew Potts. The first is punched through the covers and the second through backward point.

Short, wide and crunched away for four by Will Young.

James Anderson doesn't look best pleased ...

Not as much movement compared to Lord's. I think the breeze can confound swing, and there's maybe a bit of that at the moment. James Anderson looks the more threatening - getting close to the off stump, and with some nice movement off the seam and through the air - so far.

  11. NZ 25-0published at 10 overs

Matthew Potts is into the attack for the first time.

He bowls a yorker-length delivery that Tom Latham somehow jabs his bat down on, and it races away for four down the ground.

Looks a good day for batting, this.

New Zealand will take a small victory from seeing off Stuart Broad's opening spell. We haven't seen the movement we might see from England's bowlers, but what there has been is a little bit of surprise bounce. It makes you wonder if it's worth having a short leg in?

  14. NZ 19-0published at 8 overs

Full from Stuart Broad and Will Young drives back down the ground. Not timed to perfection as Ben Stokes chases it down.

Very little to trouble New Zealand in the over. Anderson has definitely been the pick of England's opening bowlers this morning.

I assume that is a Will Young song, Dan? I refuse to Google it. I won't give you the satisfaction.

Another beauty from James Anderson which rises up nicely, beats Latham's bat and nestles into Ben Foakes' gloves at head height.

Anderson follows that with one which shapes in. Latham shoulders his arms - a brilliant ball and a good leave.

It looks a good toss for New Zealand to lose at the moment. The pitch has a nice even pace and bounce. There's a little bit of movement but nothing extravagant at all.

  19. NZ 16-0published at 6 overs

Stuart Broad finds extra bounce from back of a length which surprises Will Young and strikes him on the gloves. The ball squirts safely into the off side. It could have gone anywhere.
