I think he would have been gone there, a lovely pick up and throw from Stuart Broad. He only had one stump to aim at. Was Will Young's bat was in the air? I think that would have been close.

  2. NZ 16-0published at 5 overs

New Zealand continue their quest to run these singles. Stuart Broad picks up one handed at mid-on and has a shy at the non-striker's end. A direct hit and it would have been close, but I think Latham would have been just in.

I've started a discussion on people we knew with famous names. There was also a Ricky Martin at my school. My colleague Ffion Wynne, sitting opposite me, knew a Stuart Little. He was a timid lad. Quiet as a mouse, apparently.

That was a thick edge, which didn't quite carry to Ollie Pope. There's a shade of green. A tinge of green on this pitch.

There's not a huge amount going on for England's bowlers. It looks very flat at the moment. I am always a bit of pessimist when you win the toss and bowling first, but it looks gun barrel straight so far.

  5. NZ 15-0published at 4 overs

Another somewhat risky run from New Zealand as Latham prods into the off side and sets off. In comes a throw from Ben Stokes at cover but Latham would have been in.

Young edges towards the slips and Pope does well to get a hand on it and limit to just one. Latham then rises tall and effortlessly punches through point for four. He follows that with a solid punch down the ground for back-to-back boundaries.

    Expensive over from Stuart Broad.

All morning I've been resisting the urge to use a Will Young pun. We're better than that, George. I think you better leave right now.

I went to school with a fella called Peter Crouch. I imagine he is still asked on a daily basis to do the robot.

George Speakman: Has Will Young ever been bowled through the (Gareth) Gates?

  8. NZ 5-0published at 3 overs

Terrific from James Anderson. The perfect length which shapes away from the right-handed Young and whistles past the outside edge. The New Zealand opener does pretty well to play inside the line, to be fair.

That was a nice accurate opening over from Stuart Broad, which asked a few questions.

To be clear; Aggers was referring to Will Young, rather than the groundsman with the sawdust.

We saw some startling running like that at Lord's too.

  12. NZ 4-0published at 2 overs

New Zealand's first runs of the day come courtesy of a Will Young back-foot punch through backward point for four.

Broad isn't too happy. He seems to be a little aggrieved by the footholes. On sprints a bloke with a bucket full of sawdust.

  13. NZ 0-0published at 1.1 overs

Will Young dabs into the off side and sets off for a quick single. He is wisely sent scrambling back by Tom Latham. Signs of early nerves from the New Zealand opener?

Stuart Broad, sporting his trademark white bandana, to bowl on his home ground.

  15. NZ 0-0published at 1 over

There's a nice breeze out there to assist the England bowlers. The respective flags of both nations are fluttering away above the pavillion.

Anderson gets one to nip sharply back into Latham's back thigh. A maiden to kick things off.

  16. NZ 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Outside off. A bit of away movement. Left well alone by Latham.

It's a good toss to win - get out there with the ball, fiddle a few wickets early on and get ahead in the game. Generally it's pretty flat here and gets better for batting on day two.

A fella with 646 Test wickets (if I could use an emoji, the 'mind blown' one would be most appropriate right now) to open the bowling for England.

It's James Anderson to Tom Latham. It's England v New Zealand. It's Test cricket on an overcast but dry morning. Here we go.

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport's chief cricket writer at Trent Bridge

Lord's is great, for obvious reasons, but there's a different feel to the northern Tests. Chaos outside the ground spills on to the roads, there's not a tie or blazer in sight. I've seen three pilots from Top Gun. You can feel the potential for a party.

England are huddled together as a smiling Ben Stokes delivers a motivational speech to his team.

There's quite a bit of cloud out there. Tom Latham and Will Young stride out to the middle.
