Monty Panesar. Cardiff 2009. 7 not out. 35 balls of hell. My wife couldn't understand why she couldn't turn the telly over.

I still get goosebumps each time I watch that.

James Anderson returns to the attack and concedes just the single.

Jimmy is looking for Test wicket 651. This was number 650...

Greatest Test innings has to be Stokes 135 at Headingley in the Ashes.

One decent delivery from Leach in this over. It's a wider line outside off. Conway goes chasing and almost plays on. Poor choice of shot.

Greatest Test innings by English batsman? Atherton's 185 in South Africa in 1995 to save a game.

Wouldn't it be terrific if Sir Cook chose one of his own knocks as England's greatest Test innings.

Oohs and aahs from England as Conway plays a leave to Potts. It wasn't too close to the stumps. A case of mind games from the slip cordon than anything else, I suspect.

But this is close! Conway prods forward, there's a gap between bat and pad and it almost takes the inside edge.

I think Cook's fighting ton in the second innings at the WACA (and I'm an Aussie!) In 2007 on a cracked pitch against Warnie, McGrath, Lee and Clark was an epic knock for such a then young player

Good point, Sam. A great innings must take the context of the game into account, as well as the individual skill displayed.

Jack Leach struggling for consistency with his line. Either too full or too short. This partnership is now worth 50.

Greatest Test innings? Easily Kevin Pietersen's 158 at the Oval. In an Ashes series, against that Australia team, to WIN the ashes. I don't think any test 100 will ever beat that.

What is the best innings by an England batter? Graham Gooch at Headingley must be in the list. Kevin Pietersen's 180 at Mumbai. I think Root's one here goes into that list in terms of quality of batsmanship.

Not for the first time, Matthew Potts bowls a leg-side line. And not for the first time, Ben Foakes makes a terrific stop behind the stumps. The 'keeper leaped like Superman to gather the ball. Fine work.

That woke up the Trent Bridge crowd, who have been a bit quiet over the past few overs.

That's the one, Leachy. He darts it in and Conway is beaten with a straight one outside the off stump.

That's not the one, Leachy. He bowls far too short and Young guides to point for three easy runs.

Give my thanks to Julian from Cheshire, he's made my Monday! I snorted with giggles and splattered my laptop with coffee. Also loving Charlie in London's dismissal of Brian Lara's 'bang average innings'. I've always felt it was overrated. I've also always wondered how Glen McGrath took so many wickets with his right-arm 'dollys'...

Completely agree with Charlie and Julian. Anderson's so-called 650th wicket was down to batter's error, so he's still on 649.

Time for Jack Leach to turn his arm for the first time this innings. Concentration is etched on the spinner's face as he bowls a maiden. He was targeted on several occasions in the first innings, particularly by Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell, going for 2-140 from 35 overs.

This pitch could turn out to be a brilliant Test match wicket. It has been an absolute road for the first three days but has done a lot more today.

Julian is being controversial but he has a wider point. Have we gone overboard about Root's innings when he isn't the game's top scorer and didn't get the job done this morning by steering us to a first-innings lead?
