  1. NZ 43-1published at 15 overs

    Lead by 57

Matthew Potts strays down the leg side and Foakes can't do much with this one. Four byes.

Potts comes back nicely with one which jags back in. Conway shoulders his arms and it's mightily close to off stump.

Ollie Pope is then in the wars as Conway flicks into the leg side but straight into the shins of the fielder at short leg. Nothing a bit of magic spray won't sort out.

Those two first innings scores have got me thinking. What’s the highest number of runs ever achieved across all four innings in a Test?

    Sean in Cumbria

There's some way to go yet, Sean. In 1939 a Test in Durban between England and South Africa saw 1,981 runs scored.

This game hasn't even got in the top 50 yet.

Julian from Cheshire has really caused a stir. And I'm here for it.

England have been on it in the field so far as Ben Stokes dives full-stretch at gully to save a boundary.

Julian from Cheshire - I think Anderson bowled a half tracker once..shall we now discount the fact he's a genius swing bowler? This is Test Cricket, people make the odd error and need a touch of luck from time to time. Come on, man!

Beauty from Matthew Potts. He angles it in and straighten up off the bounce. It fizzes past Conway's bat.

Proving Sir Cook's point, Ben Foakes leaps to his right and makes a splendid one-handed stop behind the stumps. Terrific glovework.

I don't think Ben Foakes kept as well as he could have done in the West Indies. But in the last two Tests I haven't noticed his keeping - which is a sign of a good wickekeeper, certainly in England where it is about doing the basics well.

If you notice his batting and don't notice his keeping he is doing his job.

Completely agree with Julian, let's not forget in Brian Lara's so called "masterclass" of 501, he was bowled off a no ball and dropped early on. Bang average innings.

  9. NZ 36-1published at 12 overs

An over of edges. All falling short.

Will Young softens his hands as he pushes forward to one from Broad. It takes the edge, drops well short of Ben Stokes at gully and through the gap for four.

Another outside edge, this time a little thicker, bounces in front of Alex Lees at point. The fielder launches the ball in and almost takes out his skipper. Stokes sees the funny side.

Young carves a wide delivery down to the point boundary for four, before the third outside edge of the over drops in front of Jonny Bairstow at second slip.

Not overly convincing from the Kiwi opener.

Got to agree with Julian. Pretty much the only risk to Root was making a mistake. There's no movement, the bounce is very even and the outfield extremely quick. It's not genius to score on that.

Matthew Potts has the look of a man who prepares his lunch for the week on a Sunday evening. Protein, veg and rice packed into tupperware.

Potts bowls a tight line to Conway - forcing the opener to play. Maiden.

This is perhaps an example of the 'new' England - there is not one element about this field that is about containing runs.

Ollie Pope, at short leg, vigorously twists his body left and right. Any quicker and he'll fly off.

Just a single from an uneventful over.

This could be shaping up to be a very good Test match. The scoring rate has been high so if NZ could get to a 250 lead by close of play and declare, it could be a very interesting final day. I can’t see either team playing for the draw.
