Former England batter on Test Match Special

Both batters are just ticking at a run-a-ball. It's a good surface but they're just waiting, setting up for the big finish.

I don't think it's going to come off, though. If they're aiming for 310, it probably won't be enough.

That just looped agonisingly over the fielder's head. It looked like more of a chance than it really was.

  3. SA 215-2published at 36 overs

Van der Dussen 88, Markram 43

Fair play to Durham - it sounds like they are doing everything in their power to try and help the spectators deal with his heat.

You've got to feel for the fans. Attending an England game isn't cheap these days and a lot of them will have been looking forward to this day for many months and I can't imagine this is the experience they had in mind.

On the pitch it feels like South Africa are starting to click through the gears as Aiden Markram clubs Moeen Ali down the ground for four, before a reverse sweep fortuitously loops over Brydon Carse at short third and away for a couple.

Durham have opened 'Cool Rooms' here at the ground so spectators can get some respite from the heat indoors.

The game was a sell-out but there are lots of empty seats as people take cover.

    Thanks Sam.

Everyone warm enough? Cricket is an odd game isn't it. Seven months ago I had to wear a jumper, dressing gown and blanket and was still cold while covering the Ashes. I'm now trying anything I can to keep cool - it isn't going well.

South Africa are on for a big total here, but a couple of wickets and England are into the all-rounders and tail and could restrict them drastically.

  6. 200 runs

    SA 206-2published at 35 overs

Sam Curran is back on after a good stint of spin at both ends for England.

The left-armer is around the wicket to Van der Dussen and finds the edge... but it goes away fine for four. The runs keep coming.

Just how many will South Africa get? We'll find out soon enough, for now it's over to Callum Matthews to take you through the remainder of the innings.

England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Van der Dussen looks like he's playing the Joe Root role. When Rooty's batting you can look up and all of a sudden on 30 and you don't even realise it.

He's the same, he's on 81! I didn't think he'd be on anywhere near that.

  8. SA 197-2published at 34 overs

After cutting loose in that last over, Markram maintains his momentum with another boundary. A reverse sweep this time, into the gap and straight to where the fielder had just been moved from.

South Africa look on for a big one. How many would England back themselves to chase? Not long ago you'd say pretty much anything but the batters weren't in the best form against India.

Woooo! That's the stat we were after.

  10. How's stat?!published at 15:24 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

On Anrich Nortje, he is the third-quickest bowler to have bowled more than 20 overs since the last World Cup. He averages 86.6mph, behind Mitchell Starc at 87mph and Mark Wood at 88.1 mph.

That is a fantastic shot over extra cover.

What makes him look even better is he's got his collar up like Cantona. So cool.

  12. SA 190-2published at 33 overs

Markram on the drive, superb power and timing through extra cover and it reaches the fence in no time.

Four more! Same region but it's lofted over the in-field on this occasion. Classy shot!

And a drag-down to finish from Livingstone, that's a gimme and Markram tucks in, battered through the covers once more.

  13. SA 176-2published at 32 overs

    Markram 14, vd Dussen 78

Rassie van der Dussen has reverse-swept very well so far, mainly going with the more full-blooded version of the stroke but he shows a more delicate little number here.

A straight delivery from Moeen and he gets it very fine to add three to the total.

As a fellow fast bowler, I am really looking forward to seeing Anrich Nortje bowl.

He is very fiery. I faced him once at the Wanderers - not fun. I still wake up in the night sometimes shouting, "Nortje, no!"

  15. SA 170-2published at 31 overs

Twice in the over, Livingstone seems to beat Markram in the flight. No damage done for South Africa but something for England to cling to, especially if Livingstone has to bowl more than anticipated due to Potts' struggles with the heat.

It does feel like one-day cricket from a bygone era, but that's not to say it won't work.

The width was the key there. Van der Dussen was straight on to it.

  18. SA 167-2published at 30 overs

    Markram 11, vd Dussen 72

Van der Dussen finds the boundary early in the Moeen over, punching the ball smartly through the covers.

The fielder sweeping on the off-side was stationed behind square and had no chance of getting to it.

    Mark Wood
England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Aiden Markram has looked a lot more upbeat, looks like he wants to make something happen. He's got a bit more zest.

Van der Dussen has been a bit more reserved. It could just be that they've bowled better to him, but it has picked up since Markram got out there.

England will want the spinners to rattle through their overs here. They do not want to be out there for four hours.
