It went high and fast to Kohli there at first slip who sort of parried it over his head.
Eng 83-4
Oh!
It's that awkward bounce again from Shami and Leach kind of half upper-cuts and half sways out of the way. The ball flies off the edge, Kohli gets two hands to it just over his head but can't hold on as he mistimes his jump.
India are up for this.

By a whisker!
Jonny Bairstow is fine to continue but may be wishing he'd waited a bit longer as he leaves one that swings in ferociously to just graze the top of off stump.
Gasps and disbelief all round.

Shami is extracting something from this wicket that we've never really seen.

Sean Bulpitt: I don't care for this over aggressive way of playing. In the right situation it can be effective but against the world's best you will just get blown away. Like we are seeing. Joe Root is better than that.
Jack Leach is sent out to join Jonny Bairstow. Tough gig.
Bairstow is struck on the hand by Shami and takes a breather, calling the physio out. He swats a few flies away from his face in annoyance as the physio prods and pokes at his hand, which doesn't look a very fun experience.

Joe Root never really got into his rhythm after the break. Cramped him for room there as he looked to cut. It was an uncharacteristic passage of play from Root where he looked a touch frenetic as opposed to his assured self.
Root c Pant b Siraj 31 (Eng 78-4)
Ah.
Root played and missed a couple of times earlier in the over and was lucky to survive.
Not so lucky this time. Siraj cramps him for room and Root tries to cut a ball that's far too close to his body and nicks it behind to the keeper.
That's not a good time to lose a wicket. Root had done so much of the hard work.

I think its a fine line between aggressive intent and being slightly loose and reckless. We know England are looking to be aggressive but there's a fine line between trying to hit a ball on a good length differently.
Mohammed Siraj is into the attack.
Will England try and attack the change bowlers having seen off Bumrah and Shami?
Root scampers a single from the fifth ball.
And surprise, surprise Shami beats Bairstow's outside edge with a beauty. Great over.
England will do well to survive this burst.
Way too high.
A poor review from captain Bumrah who may have just got a little over-excited with the brilliance of the balls previously.

I don't have much confidence in this one.
This has been a phenomenal start to the over for Shami.
He's cut Root in half twice, got one to bounce up and strike him on the hand and has now pinned him in front.
It's not the most convincing shout, mind you.
Ooooh. Mohammed Shami nips one right through Joe Root and it cuts him in half, the ball flying between bat and pad.
Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant shakes his head in disbelief at the sheer audacity of Root not to edge it.
A maiden! It feels like we haven't seen one of those from England for a while.

Just like we saw in the New Zealand series after 16-17 overs the ball seems to do a little less, maybe it is going a bit soft.
It means this is now an important phase for England as they look to consolidate.
Shami pins Root on the front pad, again there's an appeal but again it's probably too high and outside the line.
England aren't exactly looking uncomfortable out there but they're just not getting any opportunities to play with attacking intent. It feels like it's going to be a challenge for them to resist - or will they be happy to resort to more 'classic' Test cricket for this session?
