  2. Eng 77-3published at 19 overs

A vicious yorker from Bumrah is dug out very nicely by Bairstow from the final ball of the over.

India have not given him anything to swing his arms at so far. Can he stay patient enough?

Few more of these please, Joe.

  4. Eng 76-3published at 18 overs

    What a bizarre shot.

Jonny Bairstow looks as if he's going to pull, but the ball nips in somehow and he's in a horrible position. He kind of just flicks it into mid-wicket using his wrists but it looks weirder than that.

Anyway, he gets away with it and gets two.

And yes, I've seen the rugby result. And no, we're not talking about it.

  5. Eng 71-3published at 17 overs

    Root 27, Bairstow 8

Jasprit Bumrah pins Jonny Bairstow on the pads, appeals raucously but it's given not out. Replays show it hit Bairstow in a very delicate area so it would've been too high.

A couple of loose drives from Bairstow follow, but he's able to sneak two from the final ball with a miscued drive.

    What a bowler Bumrah is.

India will be aware that this is England's main pair. They are both in great form, scoring tons and tons of runs. This is where the game is.

  7. Eng 68-3published at 16 overs

    Make that four more!

This time in much more convincing style, driven gloriously past cover.

England will either be all out here or 150-3. At the moment I can't tell which one is more likely but I do know that it's going to be fun.

  8. Eng 64-3published at 15.3 overs

This time he does find the edge but it flies over the slips for four!

    Joe Root's intent is evident.

  9. Eng 60-3published at 15.2 overs

Mohammed Shami has five balls left of his over and he starts with a very wide delivery that Joe Root swings unnecessarily at and causes great excitement in the slips.

    Not the most assured start.

It is a beautiful, sunny late afternoon at Edgbaston now.

The India team are poised at the boundary edge, clearly keen to get a move on with things. They look fed up.

And fair enough. When you've got England three down already under cloudy skies with fresh bowlers and just an hour's play to go to sneak out a couple more, why wouldn't you want to get back out there quickly?!

  12. Postpublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 2 July 2022

If no more rain falls this evening, it's going to be a very tricky hour or so for England to get through.

The stop-start nature of days like this takes its toll on the batting side more so than the bowlers, as they've got to constantly reset and get used to the feel of the pitch again.

Plus, the water will have slowed the outfield and conditions have favoured the seamers all day.

This will certainly be a test of England's new approach.

It is a skill during these interruptions to be able to switch off and find some way of relaxing. It's so important you do because if you don't you are using up valuable energy that you need at the crease.

The ground staff are still in operation, with rollers and ropes and all sorts of methods being used to try and get some of the moisture out.

The umpires do some stomping and you can see lots of water emerging from beneath their feet, so that's probably what they're waiting to clear.

Play to restart at 18:00 - that's more than 20 minutes away. There are boos from the crowd, which isn't hard to understand. It hasn't rained for ages and how much drier can it become between now and then?

  17. Restart at 18:00 BSTpublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 2 July 2022

There will (hopefully) be more cricket!

    20 minutes to go.

  18. Postpublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 2 July 2022

One player who will most certainly want to get back out there is this man.

Standing in as captain, smashes 31 from 16 balls and then bags three England wickets.

    As you do.

The umpires are having a long chat here. There might be some areas of the pitch they are concerned about.
