Essex head coach Anthony McGrath was delighted to see his decision to pick Shane Snater ahead of Jamie Porter pay off as the paceman took 6-36 on day two against Somerset.

Porter has been a stalwart of Essex's successes in recent years and has taken 460 first-class wickets - but Snater's performance gave him match figures of 7-64 and they need only 81 more runs on day three to complete a first win of the season.

"Ports had a little bit of an injury in pre-season and he's not had loads of match time so it was a tough decision but one that's paid off," McGrath told BBC Essex.

Yorkshire batsman Harry Brook insisted he is not contemplating the possibility of playing Test cricket after scoring 101 in his first Championship innings of the summer.

The right-hander has already made his England T20 debut and could be a contender as the Test side enters a new era.

"I'm trying not to think about that at all, I'm just trying to score as many runs as I can for Yorkshire and see how far we can get," he told BBC Radio Leeds.

On Joe Root's resignation as Test skipper and the possibility of him now playing one or two games for Yorkshire, Brook added: "He's one of the best players in the world so to add him to our team would be outstanding."

  4. Salt rues century that got awaypublished at 10:36 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

    Kent 133-3 v Lancashire 506 (play resumes 11:00)

Lancashire's Phil Salt admitted he had only himself to blame after missing out on a Championship debut hundred for his new county.

The former Sussex batter hit 97 off 117 balls - with 11 fours - but holed out off Hamidullah Qadri with the chance to become the third centurion of the innings there for the taking.

"It was one of those (balls) that 99 times out of a 100 you'd put it out of the ground. It was a long hop, really, so to hit it to cow (corner) after doing all the hard work was obviously very disappointing," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"But we're in a good position, we did exactly what we set out to do at the start of the game, so I'm just happy to make a contribution to help put us in a good position."

  6. Good morningpublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 16 April 2022

No major England announcements this morning - so cricket fans around the country can focus their attention on the County Championship.

Somerset lost to Hampshire in three days last week and could be about to suffer the same fate, with Essex needing only 81 runs to win at Taunton.

Elsewhere in Division One, Hampshire are facing the possibility of having to follow-on against Surrey and Kent will need to bat well to stave off a similar scenario against Lancashire.
