    Hampshire 92-5 v Lancashire

A 50 partnership for the sixth wicket between Nick Gubbins and Felix Organ is helping Hampshire to fight back after Lancashire's early onslaught.

The sight of George Balderson and Danny Lamb bowling is probably a welcome one after the efforts of Jimmy Anderson, Hassan Ali and Tom Bailey this morning.

    Masood c & b Hogan 60 (Derbyshire 115-2 v Glamorgan)

Do not adjust your screens - Shan Masood is out!

The Derbyshire opener gets a leading edge off Michael Hogan and the bowler takes a superb one-handed catch.

It was going to take something special like that to get him.

Masood's batting average for the season plummets to 134.20.

  3. Postpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Gloucestershire v Surrey 87-3

Ollie Pope pushes one through the covers for two to bring up a 50 partnership between him and Jamie Smith.

Pope is on 39 and Smith has made 25.

  4. 'Destructive spell by Paterson'published at 14:18 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Notts v Worcs 137-8

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

This performance from Dane Paterson has been coming. Since arriving at Trent Bridge he has often picked up three or four wickets but a truly destructive spell has been lacking from the CV.

Since replacing Stuart Broad at the Pavilion End early on today he has sent down 13 overs, broken only by lunch, and taken seven of the eight wickets to fall, hooping the ball both ways.

Worcestershire in all sorts of trouble at 137-8.

Notts paceman Dane Paterson now has SEVEN wickets! Worcestershire are 137-8 at Trent Bridge and he'll be gunning for nine.

Leicestershire are also struggling with the bat at Middlesex - they're 90-8.

Derbyshire opener Shan Masood continues on his merry way against Glamorgan. He's on 58 with his side 113-1.

Durham have managed to not lose a wicket since lunch, but they're still in trouble on 105-6 at Sussex.

  6. 50 runs

for Coxpublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Yorkshire v Kent 122-3

Jordan Cox goes to a fine half-century.

And it brings up the hundred stand with Daniel Bell-Drummond.

This is some recovery from 20-3.

  7. Lancashire pacemen 'tearing in'published at 14:08 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Hampshire 80-5 v Lancs

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Manchester Sport

With James Anderson, Tom Bailey and Hassan Ali all tearing in this morning and ripping through the Hampshire top order a penny for the thoughts of James Vince.

His decision to bat first looked a brave move, and at the toss Dave Vilas said he was happy with the outcome because he fancied a bowl.

His bowlers didn't disappoint him, and all the chances they created were taken with some impressive work behind the stumps from the keeper and the slips.

  8. wicket

    Gay c A Cook b Snater 35 (Essex v Northants 100-2)

Essex really needed a wicket and Shane Snater has delivered!

Coming round the wicket, he induces an edge from Emilio Gay and the left-hander nicks it to Sir Alastair Cook, who makes no mistake.

A decent knock from Gay, but he can't go on.

  9. 50 runs

50 for Will Youngpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Essex v Northants 100-1

A single helps Northants opener Will Young bring up his half century off 112 balls with five fours.

It is also the hundred for his team and a century partnership between him and number three Emilio Gay.

  10. Postpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Hampshire 78-5 v Lancashire

A gorgeous cover drive from Felix Organ brings up a boundary off Hassan Ali.

Organ and Nick Gubbins are digging in well here for Hants as they try to fight back from their earlier problems at 40-5.

Finally a wicket for the defending champions.

    663 runs and counting...

  13. 'Batting should get easier'published at 13:51 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Gloucs v Surrey 62-3

    Edward Seabourne
    BBC Radio Bristol commentator

A handy morning for Gloucestershire, winning a good toss on a green-tinged surface and with the skies overcast and grabbing three key wickets.

They'd be happy with those scalps, but Surrey will know that batting should get easier throughout the day, and the afternoon session figures to be a key one potentially in the match as a whole.

After both openers were each given lives on 4, Gloucestershire rebounded with David Payne taking a wicket with his first ball of the season after a disrupted buildup due to covid, and Matt Taylor with his first ball of the match. A good morning, but much work to be done in session two!

  14. Postpublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Essex v Northants 91-1

I've had an excellent fast bowler's lunch of spaghetti and meatballs. Plenty of energy in the tank for the afternoon session!

Not such a good start for Essex's Shane Snater as Will Young has crunched three fours off the first over after lunch.

  15. Five-wicket haulpublished at 13:44 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Notts v Worcs 114-6

    Dane PatersonImage source, Rex Features

Dane Paterson picks up his fifth wicket straight after lunch at Trent Bridge!

The Notts seamer gets Ben Cox lbw with the third ball of the afternoon session.

The South African now has 5-33.

Teams are beginning to make their way back out after lunch.

Let's find out what the afternoon sessions have in store...

  17. 'A good toss to lose'published at 13:34 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Somerset 130-0 v Warwickshire

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

If ever there was a good toss to lose, then surely this was the one.

A combination of Somerset's recent batting form, an overcast sky and a green-tinged pitch presumably persuaded Will Rhodes to ask Tom Abell to have a bat when he called correctly.

Two and a half hours later, as he walked off for lunch with Somerset on 130-0, he must have been wondering what on earth had possessed him.

There was occasional movement off the seam, but no perceptible swing, and Matt Renshaw and Tom Lammonby went about their business positively, attractively and - apart from one sharp chance put down by Dom Sibley in the gully - hardly a false shot.

In the context of Somerset's recent batting, it was a truly remarkable morning.

  18. 'Sussex's best morning of season'published at 13:30 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Sussex v Durham 79-6

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

Sussex have enjoyed their best morning of the season after Durham had won the toss and decided to bat.

The visitors collapsed from 60-1, losing 5 for 15, three of those wickets taken by the 21-year-old Sussex all-rounder Tom Clark.

This does look a good pitch, and the cloud cover at Hove may be a factor, but either way having not won in 17 County Championship matches, Sussex have made an encouraging start.

  19. 'Good recovery from Kent'published at 13:25 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Yorkshire v Kent 89-3

    Ben Watts
    BBC Radio Kent

A good recovery from the visitors to reach 89-3 at lunch after Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf blew away the top order.

Zak Crawley and Jack Leaning both looked beaten for pace as they tried to play to leg.

Yorkshire’s decision at the toss was perhaps due to the cloudy conditions, but the cool temperature hasn’t produced much swing.

Daniel Bell-Drummond (50*) played positively from the outset and has looked in confident mood having made 149 last week v Hampshire.

  20. 'Fast-paced opening session'published at 13:21 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Notts v Worcs 114-5

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Stuart Broad’s comeback performance was slightly overshadowed by South Africa’s Dane Paterson during a fast-paced opening session at Trent Bridge.

In front of watching England scout James Taylor, Broad took the first wicket of the day, having Jake Libby caught behind during his initial four-over burst.

Paterson replaced the England quick and struck instant gold, having Ed Pollock taken at slip with his first delivery, before also picking up the wickets of Azhar Ali, Brett D’Oliveira and Ed Barnard.

Jack Haynes has stood firm though for the Pears, reaching an accomplished unbeaten 33 by the interval.
