  1. 'Northamptonshire's morning'published at 13:12 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Essex v Northants 79-1

    Glenn Speller
    BBC Essex sport

Northamptonshire’s morning after losing the toss and being put in to bat.

They may have feared the worst when they lost captain, Ricardo Vasconcelos, to the third ball of Sam Cook’s opening over but since then Emilio Gay and Will Young have looked solid.

Two edges have dropped short in the slips but otherwise it has looked a decent surface to bat on and Essex will have to come up with a plan at lunch as to how they are going to prise these two out.

Shan Masood looks odds-on to reach the famous landmark of 1,000 first-class runs before the end of May.

It's only been done eight times.

Can you name the last man to do so in an English season?

  8. Run-machine Masoodpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Derbyshire 67-1 v Glamorgan

I said earlier Derbyshire opener Shan Masood was having a good season.

91, 62, 239, 219 and now 30 not out are his scores so far.

641 runs at an average of 160.

And the promise of plenty more to come today...

  9. New ball!published at 12:49 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Hampshire 59-5 v Lancashire

A slight delay at the Rose Bowl as Lancashire have asked for a new ball.

Tom Bailey has the new one in his hand as Lancs seek a second bonus point in the last few minutes before lunch,

A first fifty of the season for Somerset opener Matt Renshaw.

He's found the boundary prolifically in this morning session, hitting eight fours and a six.

Somerset are off to a dream start at Taunton.

Stokes the right choice for England captain? #bbccricket

Lee Hirst: I think Ben is a great choice but the problems run deep within the team. A lot of work to be done but am optimistic!

  13. Division Two updatepublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

The game at Trent Bridge is moving along swiftly. Nottinghamshire have just picked up their fourth wicket to leave Worcestershire 100-4 - captain Brett D'Oliveira the man to go to Dane Paterson.

Shan Masood continues to bat as he has done all season for Derbyshire. The Pakistan opener is 25 not out with his side 61-1 against Glamorgan.

Leicestershire are in all sorts of trouble at 49-5 against Middlesex at Lord's.

Durham are also in a spot of bother at Sussex. David Bedingham has just fallen to leave them 72-4.

Simon Goodall: I just hope Ben makes a better fist of it than the two previous all rounders who captained England: Namely Beefy and Freddy.

But that's one of the best shots of the morning.

Mohammad Amir is a touch full, allowing Jamie Smith to show the full face of the bat and drive it through the covers for four.

  16. A proper April morning sessionpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

With wickets tumbling all over the country, it really feels like an April morning session of County Championship cricket.

Conditions are cool, some of the bowling has been excellent, while credit to the slippers for some super grabs.

    Essex v Northants 50-1

Will Young pushes one through for a single and that brings up the 50 partnership for him and Emilio Gay.

  18. Postpublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Essex v Northants 48-1

With wickets tumbling elsewhere, Northants have made nice, sedate progress at Chelmsford.

The sight of spinner Simon Harmer coming into the attack so soon is probably a moral victory for the batting pair of Will Young and Emilio Gay.

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 28 April 2022

    Amla c Harris b M Taylor 6 (Gloucestershire v Surrey 37-3)

    A big breakthrough for Gloucestershire.

Hashim Amla's difficult stay at the crease is over. He drives at one he could have left off Matt Taylor and the ball flies into the hands of Australia opener Marcus Harris at third slip.

    Somerset 62-0 v Warwickshire

This is just what the doctor ordered after three defeats in their opening three matches.

Tom Lammonby (35 not out) and former Australia opener Matt Renshaw (26 not out) are laying a solid foundation at Taunton.
