Could have been worse for Warwickshire yesterday, but it could have been a whole lot better. They need to restrict Yorkshire to 300 at most."

  4. Partnerships the focus for Kent - Comptonpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 20 May 2022

    Northants v Kent 286-2

Opener Ben Compton believes batting consistency down the order is the key to more victories for Kent this season.

The left-hander will resume on 125 not out against Northants following substantial partnerships with Zak Crawley and Daniel Bell-Drummond, who both passed 50 before getting out.

"As a batting unit we've all had success individually - but getting 280-300 when maybe one guy gets a big score, we're putting a lot of emphasis on a couple of guys getting in together and I think that will translate to bigger totals," he told BBC Radio Kent.

Compton's hundred was his fourth of the season, but he said: "I'm delighted with the start I've made but I'm quite aware that cricket can be a treacherous game, so I'm just trying to keep on an even keel about it."

  7. Patience the key at Taunton - Abbottpublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 20 May 2022

    Somerset 211 v Hampshire 29-0

Hampshire's Kyle Abbott says finding the right line and length at Taunton is tricky despite bowling out Somerset on the opening day of their Championship game.

"We just did our normal thing, try to control their (scoring) rate and just sit on them for as long as possible," the South African, who took 3-60, told BBC Radio Solent.

"We did find that from back of a length, it was probably doing too much and once you played the line, you missed it by a long way.

"You can caught up with the that, the oohs and ahs, but it's not really effective, and when you go quite full and on the stumps, it's quite easy (for the batters). It's just a game of patience, really."

  9. Thompson still adjusting to new-ball rolepublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 20 May 2022

    Yorkshire 28-0 v Warwickshire 244

    Jordan ThompsonImage source, Rex Features

Jordan Thompson is trying to avoid putting too much pressure on himself to take wickets after being entrusted with the new ball by Yorkshire.

With so many injuries among their bowlers, he has stepped into the breach and took 3-74 as Warwickshire were bowled out on day one at Headingley.

"I feel like I've bowled well with the new ball the last few weeks - start of the season I didn't get it quite right - without much luck really and it's been frustrating at times," he told BBC Wets Yorkshire Sport.

"I feel that subconsciously I'm putting a bit more pressure on myself with wicket-taking bowlers like Coady (Ben Coad) and Fish (Matt Fisher) missing which isn't helpful for the team because I'm going for a few more runs than I'd like to."

    Wiaan MulderImage source, Rex Features

South African Wiaan Mulder believes a win is "just around the corner" for Leicestershire despite another poor day at the start of their Division Two game at Worcester.

They changed captains earlier this week - with Callum Parkinson replacing Colin Ackermann - after failing to win any of their first six games, but were bowled out in 52.2 overs at New Road.

"We start well, fight well, then have a really bad session that puts us back. We won’t give up, and a win is around the corner so we’ll just keep going," Mulder told BBC Radio Leicester.

  14. Good morningpublished at 10:25 British Summer Time 20 May 2022

There were 1,923 runs scored and 56 wickets taken on the opening day of the current County Championship games.

For those of a numerical bent, that's an average of 34.3393 runs per wicket, which suggests that bowlers had a better day.

There were, though, centuries for Essex's Dan Lawrence and Ben Compton of Kent and both will be able to resume their innings on day two.

Welcome to our coverage. Play is scheduled to start at 11:00.
