    That was a day of County Championship action that had everything.

    Game of the day was undoubtedly at Chelmsford where 16 wickets fell as Hampshire got themselves on top against Essex, only for Shane Snater's 71 and a sublime spell of spin from Simon Harmer to turn the game on its head.

    There were tons for a Surrey pair at either end of the experience scale - 39-year-old Hashim Amla and 20-year-old Oval debutant Ben Geddes - while Gloucestershire's Chris Dent, Northants' Rob Keogh, Notts' Haseeb Hameed, Derbyshire's Wayne Madsen and Worcestershire's Ed Barnard all hit centuries too.

    But it was a day to please the table-toppers as Division One leaders Surrey closed on 445-5 against Kent as their main title rivals Hampshire and Lancashire toiled, while Division Two leaders Nottinghamshire assumed control of their top-two clash with Middlesex.

    Chris Dent's day in Bristol. A superb century to steer bottom side Gloucestershire to a highly respectable 279-7, with the prospect of more to come.

    Left-arm spinner Jack Morley, who celebrated his 21st birthday only yesterday, took 3-79, including two in two balls, and there were two wickets each for Tom Bailey and Luke Wood.

    But Dent’s unbeaten 109 off 246 balls, with 16 fours, his second Championship century of the season - and his 20th for Gloucestershire - helped the hosts edge the day.

    Worcestershire 271, Glamorgan 32-3

    No further damage done for Glamorgan as opener Ed Byrom and Sam Northeast see the visitors to the close.

    What seemed like a nightmare on for Worcestershire early doors, coming on top of Friday night's T20 Blast mauling by the Bears. has actually turned into their day.

    Century for Chris Dent

    Gloucestershire 270-7 v Lancashire

    Late in the day, Chris Dent reaches the 20th first-class century of his Gloucestershire career.

    It draws him level on the list of all-time glorious Gloucester ton makers with Mark Alleyne and Chris Taylor - and both of them are in the crowd watching, as it is the annual Gloucestershire former players' day in Bristol.

    Two more overs left of a delayed, rain-affected day after this one.

    Frustrating for Lancashire as Dent and Zafar Gohar have now put on 63 for the eight wicket.

    Leach strikes again at New Road

    Joe Leach is on fire at New Road - a third wicket for the former Worcestershire skipper.

    He ends his second over as he started it, with a wicket, as Colin Ingram is given out leg before.

    Sam Northeast comes in to join Ede Byrom, who is still to get off the mark.

    Still five overs left to face tonight.

    Northants 420-6 v Warwickshire

    Definitely Northamptonshire's day against Warwickshire at Wantage Road as they piled up 420-6 thanks to Rob Keogh’s first century since April - 130 in three and three quarter hours.

    Josh Cobb (88), Emilio Gay (70) both hit half-centuries - and Lewis McManus, 57 overnight, will be hoping in the morning.

    Bad day for the reigning county champions.

    Joe Leach bags a second quick scalp on his return from injury.

    Having struck with the third ball in his first over, he now strikes again with the first ball of his second, to remove nightwatchman James Harris.

    Jamie Smith is clean bowled by Kent debutant Toby Pettman to bring an end to the opening day's action at The Oval.

    The fact Pettman and Matt Milnes are Kent's top bowlers with 2-75 and 2-95 respectively tells you it's been Surrey's day.

    The Division One leaders have been imperious with Oval debutant Ben Geddes and Hashim Amla both hitting 124 and sharing a double-century stand before Smith (55) and Sam Curran (53no off 28 balls) stepped up the hitting late in the day.

    Essex 238 v Hampshire 68-6 - Hampshire trail by 170 runs with four wickets remaining

    What a day's play at Chelmsford.

    At 56-5, Essex looked forlorn but Tom Westley's 46 was the glue that kept them stuck together before Shane Snater smashed 71 off 73 balls, with Aaron Beard adding a useful 33.

    Their total of 238 still looked on the small side but then Simon Harmer, not for the first time, put the frighteners on the Hampshire batters.

    He's taken 4-23 to reduce the visitors to 68-6 at close and all of a sudden Essex are firm favourites, showing just how quickly cricket matches can be turned on their head.

    Notts 378-4 v Middlesex

    Division Two leaders Nottinghamshire close on 378-4, with all-rounder Lyndon James on 90 not out, just 10 shy of his second hundred of 2022, and skipper Steven Mullaney not far behind on 79.

    Fuelled by Haseeb Hameed's 101 earlier, his second century of the summer against Middlesex, it has all added up to Notts dominating in this meeting of the Division Two top two.

    Is this the Blast?

    Sam Curran has smashed a 26-ball 50 for Surrey against Kent.

    He's the fourth Surrey batter to make a half-century today - can he and Jamie Smith (55no) follow Hashim Amla and Ben Geddes into the century books?

    Early breakthrough for Joe Leach as he snares Glamorgan skipper David Lloyd third ball.

    50 for Lewis McManus

    Northants 406-6 v Warwickshiure

    Northamptonshire reach 400 in the day to get to maximum batting points - and that is rapidly followed by on-loan Lewis McManus reaching his fifty.

    He is the fourth half-centurion of the day.

    Derbyshire 339-5 v Sussex

    What a day for Derbyshire's Wayne Madsen, unbeaten on 171 at close of play at Hove.

    He's hit more than half of Derbyshire's 339-5, guiding a superb recovery from 83-4.

    Luis Reece (52) and Anuj Dal (45no) have both shared century partnerships with Madsen to frustrate Sussex, who took just one wicket post-lunch.

    Centurion Barnard finally out at New Road

    Worcestershire 271 all out v Glamorgan

    A superb knock from Ed Barnard finally comes to an end for Worcestershire as he is bowled by Michael Neser, then two balls later Charlie Morris is out too.

    Great effort from Barnard, whose century was his second highest score - and earned the Pears two unlikely batting points, having been 63-5 not long before lunch.

    Glamorgan will have eight overs to face tonight.

    Simon Harmer on a hat-trick...

    Oh, and he was so close to getting it!

    After removing Nick Gubbins with the final ball of his previous over, he then gets the first delivery of his next over to leap up at Aneurin Donald, and Michael Pepper takes the catch. Donald was not happy with the decision, gesturing that it hit his forearm, not glove.

    Then Keith Barker is caught out by the hat-trick ball and loops a soft one up - but it falls between two close-in fielders. So unlucky for Harmer who has 4-21 now. The close cannot come soon enough for Hampshire.

    Yep, Simon Harmer again.

    In fairness, Nick Gubbins had been the only Hampshire batter with the temerity to take the Essex spinner on and nailed him for a couple of boundaries.

    But he misjudges one and edges it to Dan Lawrence, who completes a simple catch. Big wicket of a danger man with only a handful of overs remaining tonight.
