  1. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:04 British Summer Time 11 July 2022

    Hill c Patel b Worrall 0 (Yorkshire 1-1 v Surrey)

Play under way at North Marine Road and Daniel Worrall has the new ball for Surrey.

He yields up only a leg bye before the final delivery of the over sees George Hill on his way for a duck, caught at third slip.

Great start by the Division One leaders.

  2. wicket

    WICKET Vasconcelos c †Billings b Quinn 0published at 11:03 British Summer Time 11 July 2022

    Kent v Northants 0-1

Having not been in Northants' T20 plans, Ricardo Vasconcelos hasn't done too much over the past eight weeks.

5 and 4 were his returns from the only Championship match Northants have played since the middle of May.

He admitted to his future clouding his mind but signed a new deal to stay at Wantage Road until 2025.

If he hoped that would open the door to runs again, it hasn't worked sadly.

Matt Quinn around the wicket gets the first ball of the match to straighten a fraction down the slope to the left-hander.

Vaconcelos nicks it behind and walks off with a diamond duck.

  3. Good luck to debutantspublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 11 July 2022

Before today's games get under way, we just want to wish the best of luck to several players who are making first-class debuts today.

They include Will Luxton (Yorkshire), Jack Rew (Somerset), Matthew Montgomery (Notts) and Stanley McAlindon and Tom Mackintosh (Durham).

Incidentally, one of Madrid-born Tom's middle names is apparently Sabater. Now that's not one you hear every day of the week.

  5. New faces look to make impactpublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 11 July 2022

    County Championship (play starts 11:00)

With short-term contracts now very much a 'thing' in county cricket, a new round of Championship games sees a handful of clubs give debuts to a handful of new faces.

Yorkshire have signed West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, while Somerset hope Surrey spinner Amar Virdi - signed on loan for one game - will compensate for Jack Leach's unavailability.

Somerset will not be facing India all-rounder Washington Sundar in the Lancashire ranks as he is still recovering from an injury - the Red Rose county are looking to close a 19-point gap on Division One leaders Surrey.

In Division Two, two Aussies will be sampling Championship life - Nic Maddinson for Durham and Hilton Cartwright for Derbyshire, the latter having already played for the club in the T20 Blast, while India paceman Umesh Yadav has joined Middlesex for the rest of the season.

  6. Bazball - the originspublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 11 July 2022

    County Championship (play starts 11:00)

The fashionable word in cricket at the moment is, of course, Bazball.

And we are wondering if the tenets of Brendon McCullum will filter down to county level this week.

But archaeologists excavating underneath the old BBC TV Centre in Shepherd's Bush have found evidence that Bazball is nothing new.

It appears that an early humanoid, Proteus Cheekslappicus, used to gather round a sacred box once a week and study drawings of their twin gods, known as Morecambe and Wise.

While doing so, they uttered various chants, one of which began: "When you feel down, try positive thinking, that's what I'm told the man said, don't wear a frown, try positive thinking, laugh at your troubles instead."

    So now you know....

    County Championship (play starts 11:00)

Benign batting conditions at most grounds meant that five of the seven games in the last round of Championship matches - which began on 26 June - ended in draws.

There were 21 centuries in total, four in one innings by Division One leaders Surrey and one in each innings by Daniel Bell-Drummond, for their opponents Kent.

Essex were the only winners in Division One, with spinner Simon Harmer claiming 15 wickets as they beat Hampshire by 12 runs in three days.

Billy Root was unlucky not to join the list of centurions but his 99 not out was a match-winning knock for Glamorgan as they beat Worcestershire by three wickets at New Road.

Incidentally, the new 'full-length' forecasts on the 10 o'clock news afford a never-before opportunity to scrutinise the footwear of BBC forecasters. Wedge heels, white ankle boots, stylish brogues have all been present and correct recently, but this evening, perhaps, it'll be flip flops.
