The runfest has continued at Hove, with 1488 runs scored, but just 14 wickets falling in the match so far

Ali Orr has shown there is no change in the pitch and has passed 50 for the third innings in a row. It's now inevitable that this game is heading for a draw.

Whether this type of wicket is good for the game is a matter for discussion, certainly the paying public have voted with their feet today.

Watching batters plunder runs at will, and bowlers flogging away for little or no reward, hasn’t made for a great spectacle.

  2. Durham hit self-destruct buttonpublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Durham 143-5 v Derbyshire - tea

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Having been set an unlikely 386 to win on a placid pitch, this game appeared to be heading nowhere but a draw in the moments leading up to tea.

Australian Nic Maddinson and South African David Bedingham had put on 41 for the fourth Durham wicket and didn't appear to be in any danger. Then Alex Thompson came into the attack and struck in his first over.

The spinner took three wickets on day two, with players looking to cash in, eyes lit up, as they tried to hammer him for runs.

Today Maddinson did the same thing. The first ball he faced of the over he looked to slog sweep and fell LBW for 30. It was an awful piece of cricket so close to tea.

But if that wasn't bad enough David Bedingham got himself run out five balls later for 24 as Durham went from 142-3 to 144-5.

Derbyshire must now feel they can get the remaining five wickets in the 39 overs left - but that's still easier said than done here.

Bedingham run out 24 (Durham 143-5, target 386) v Derbys

Derbyshire are suddenly sniffing victory at Chester-le-Street as they pick up two quick wickets on the stroke of tea.

Sam Conners throws down the stumps to run out David Bedingham - just after Alex Thomson had removed Nic Maddinson for 30.

Five more wickets needed in the final session, with the 386 target a distant dream now for Durham.

  4. Tea at Southportpublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Lancs 624-9 dec v Somerset 446 & 151-4

Somerset's youthful fifth-wicket pair of Lewis Goldsworthy and James Rew have thwarted Lancashire during the afternoon with an unbroken stand of 76.

Goldworthy goes to tea on 58, with teenager Rew - making his County Championship debut for Somerset - 19 not out.

The visitors now need only 27 more runs to make Lancashire bat again, with 29 overs remaining.

    Kent 96-4 (target 365) v Northants

Northamptonshire's spinners have given their side a genuine chance of pushing for victory in the final session after taking four Kent wickets for 24.

Simon Kerrigan picked up the first three, with Rob Keogh adding the wicket of Joe Denly to leave the visitors needing six more wickets for what would be their first Championship win of the season.

Jack Leaning and Jordan Cox, both six not out, stand in their way.

    Burns st Tattersall b Bess 20 (Surrey 32-1 - target 227)

Nice use of the feet by Rory Burns, who skips a couple of paces down the track and whips Dom Bess away through mid-wicket for four.

But when he tries it again, he is beaten by a bit of turn and it's a comfortable stumping for Jonny Tattersall - his fourth of the game.

That will be tea - with Surrey needing 195 from 37 overs to win.

    Surrey 25-0 - target 227

Only four overs gone, but Yorkshire call up spinner Dom Bess, who took five wickets in Surrey's first innings.

Just two runs to Ryan Patel from a tidy opener. Surrey need 202 more from 39.

  9. Division Two updatepublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Nottinghamshire are now 171-3 at Sophia Gardens with Joe Clarke 88 not out and Lyndon James on 29.

Little joy for Leicestershire at Hove where Sussex are 140-1, just 28 behind, after Tom Alsop collects a boundary off Ben Mike.

Durham have reached 141-3 against Derbyshire, with Nic Maddinson (30) and David Bedingham (22) together.

    Surrey 24-0 - target 227

Perhaps not exactly where Rory Burns was aiming, but the ball runs down to third man for four off Jordan Thompson.

Steven Patterson fails to learn the lesson of his previous over as he drops short again to Ryan Patel and concedes four more.

    Denly lbw b Keogh 5 (Kent 88-4, target 365)

Northamptonshire are suddenly sensing a genuine opportunity now at Canterbury!

It's spin again that does the trick - this time Rob Keogh, who lures Joe Denly into no-man's land and raps him on the pad.

You never got the feeling Kent were likely to chase 365 anyway, but it's certainly all about shutting up shop for them now.

  12. Postpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Surrey 12-0 - target 227

Yorkshire skipper Steven Patterson opts to take the new ball himself, rather than entrust it to West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel.

But his fifth delivery is too short and Ryan Patel has plenty of time to cut it away for four.

For the second time in this match, a superb knock by Lewis Goldsworthy, who drives Will Williams through gully for four to bring up his 50 off 128 balls.

Credit also to his partner, 18-year-old Championship debutant James Rew, who has helped Goldsworthy - a comparatively old hand at 21 - to add 62 so far.

This partnership may well prove to be a match-saving one for Somerset, who now trail by just 41.

  14. Postpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Surrey 8-0 - target 227

Surrey start their run-chase at Scarborough in positive fashion and there is a Rory Burns boundary from the final ball of Jordan Thompson's opening over.

There are 43 more to come, so they need just about five an over.

Ali Orr continues to go his shots at Hove and a square cut followed by two cover drives brings him three successive fours off Callum Parkinson's left-arm spin. He has 69 off 75 balls and partner Tom Alsop is on 11.

Glamorgan's chances of victory are receding as Joe Clarke continues his impressive knock at Sophia Gardens.

He is now 81 not out and has added 73 with Lyndon James, who has 25.

An outswinger by Jamie Overton is way too good for Shannon Gabriel who can only edge it to the keeper.

The England fast bowler finishes with a career-best 6-61 from 17.5 overs and Surrey will chase a target of 227 for their seventh win of the season.

Matthew Waite is left unbeaten on 59 not out from 77 balls, an innings which included 10 fours.

Now then, this is getting interesting...

Emilio Gay pockets the catch at short leg and Kent have suddenly lost three wickets for 16, all to Kerrigan.

Three fours in an over by Matthew Waite, the first of which takes him to a 73-ball half-century, his first in the Championship.

Dan Worrall's figures suffer a bit and he now has 1-74. Yorkshire are 222 in front but it will be Jamie Overton to number 11 Shannon Gabriel next.
