  8. Playing it late the key - Organpublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 6 September 2022

Hampshire 229-5 v Northamptonshire (play due to start 10:30)

    Felix OrganImage source, Rex Features

Hampshire opener Felix Organ was pleased to see his work on combatting a seaming ball pay off in his 71 on the opening day against Northants at the Ageas Bowl.

Victory would lift them to the top of Division One and put the pressure on current leaders Surrey, who are not in action this week.

"There were a few plays and misses but it felt decent. I've done enough practice to get use to the ball moving around and hopefully get in a position to play it late," Organ told BBC Radio Solent.

"We would have bowled so to lose the toss and batting we would have taken that. The pitch is quite green, we left a bit of grass on it, as we are pushing for a result and rain may come. We need to take 20 wickets."

  9. Essex respond well to change of formatpublished at 10:17 British Summer Time 6 September 2022

    Kent v Essex 327-4 (matches resumes 10:30)

    Anthony McGrathImage source, Rex Features

Essex head coach Anthony McGrath professed himself "pretty satisfied" with their opening-day effort against Kent.

Alastair Cook and Tom Westley made half-centuries after the visitors were asked to bat first before Matt Critchley (80no) and Feroze Khushi (46no) carried them to a third batting point.

"We would have bowled first too, as we thought with the half ten start, we might be able to nip a few out early. But we lost the toss and we're now in a fairly good position," McGrath told BBC Essex.

"You are never quite sure how the guys are going to go after a white-ball tournament, so I think we couldn't have asked for a lot more than how we've finished."

  10. Postpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 6 September 2022

  11. Gloomy prospects at Old Traffordpublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 6 September 2022

Lancashire 272-8 v Yorkshire (after day one)

The Roses match is intriguingly poised after a see-saw opening day, so this is not good news.

  12. Weather outlookpublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 6 September 2022

Apart from a lengthy hold-up at the Ageas Bowl, we were pretty lucky with the weather on day one.

BBC Weather reports there were about 30,000 lightning flashes across England and northern France last night.

And today's prospects? Perhaps not so good.
