  1. Eng 189-5published at 36 overs

    Stokes 15, Jacks 8

Jacks is down and plays a delicate sweep, very fine, but the catcher on the leg side is briefly interested.

That is the first of two twos for the Surrey man in the over before he pushes at a ball that just holds in the pitch and the ball hangs in the air for a while. It's wide of short extra, though, and falls short of mid off.

Tattz: The truth is this is still new territory for England & Test cricket. Yes, five wickets down (two gifts and three excellent deliveries). But 180 by lunch on day one, on a pitch already turning is quite something. What exactly it is we will find out in due course. I’m hooked.

  3. Eng 184-5published at 35 overs

Relatively steady stuff to start this session with Jacks and Stokes just pushing singles as they try to get themselves reacclimatised with the conditions.

    Three from Abrar's over.

  4. Postpublished at 08:33 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

Unsurprisingly, Abrar Ahmed will continue from the other end.

Tim Milford: I know it won't happen, but I'd love Stokes to give himself 40 or 50 balls to just get settled. He can accelerate after, but if he gets his eye in then it gives him such a better chance of putting a score together (as opposed to just teeing off).

  6. Eng 181-5published at 34 overs

Play and a miss first ball of the session as Jacks drives at Nawaz. The England man settles down after that and scores the first run of the session with a punch through the covers for one.

  7. Postpublished at 08:30 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

Right then, we're just about ready for the off in this afternoon session. Mohammad Nawaz has the ball and Will Jacks is on strike.

  8. Postpublished at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

Even when they lose five wickets in a session, England are making waves across the cricketing world.

Not too long until the start of the afternoon session gets underway and I'm struggling to figure out what a good score on this pitch might be.

England's aggressive approach has been brilliant to watch but it's so at odds with everything you thought you knew about Test cricket that it's hard to even make sense of where we're at in the match!

Rachel T: 180 runs on the board at lunch. I do love it.

James Earnshaw: Good vibes, it seems, can only take you so far.

It is going to be interesting to see how Ben Stokes and Will Jacks play it after lunch. They are the last two recognised batters.

Given the approach taken by the England skipper in the last couple of overs before lunch, I wouldn't expect much in the way of consolidation, though.

Tom Webb: I think Stokes needs to play one of his T20 innings now and consolidate for a session before reverting to Test match slog after tea.

Kumaran Ravendradas: Real test for Stokes the batsman here. He has been the more reckless in this new era of Baz-ball getting out slogging needlessly or playing poor shots. The other batters didn't do that in the last Test. Can he rein it in and get England up to a respectable score?

Ollie Pope also looked in very good touch, making 60 from 61 balls.

He reverse swept the first and last ball of his innings, both off Abrar. The former raced away for four, the latter dollied up to backward point. Risk and reward...

Anyway, for the first hour or more it looked like being England's morning. Ben Duckett was excellent again, bringing up his half-century from 40 balls as he showcased his many different sweeps and reverse sweeps to score well square of the wicket.

The sweep was eventually his undoing but it was still a good innings from the left-hander.

FPL Arthur: Extra seamer looking like a horrible decision already.

  17. Postpublished at 07:56 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

This is all disappointingly considered. Where is the doom and gloom that usually follows England losing a few wickets in a hurry?

As Suhel mentioned him, I would have loved to have seen Rehan Ahmed, but then I'm always up for playing a leg-spinner.

Adam Davies: Absolutely disgraceful from England. They haven't gone hard enough!

Suhel Ahmed: It’s been a fascinating first session of cricket. Abrar with a five-wicket haul, very well done but it’s been spinning from the off. Very interesting game indeed. England also going great guns. Did England miss a trick by not picking Rehan Ahmed?

Lewis Richard Russell: One thing I love about this new approach is, if I absolutely have to leave the feed while an England batter is in the flirty 40s or nervy 90s, at least I know the matter will be resolved, one way or the other, when I return 10 seconds later.

Sam Marshall: Let's not forget how far England have come. Not too long ago we would have bitten your hand off for 180-5 on an interesting pitch away from home.

Magical stuff from Abrar. His control has been impressive, even when England were getting after him. Nothing short at all.
