That is fantastic. He had to hit because Cameron Green was nowhere near the stumps to help.

He is running to his wrong side so he's had to get the ball, turn and throw.

Dawson run out (Agar) 11 (Eng 158-6)

Oh dear. This isn't very good.

Liam Dawson dabs one to Ashton Agar at backward point - it is to his left, but there was never a run. Dawson sets off, trying to get Malan back on strike, and Agar finishes it off with a direct hit.

    Lovely bit of fielding.

After becoming double world champions, you would want a couple of weeks off. But cricket doesn't work that way any more.

Everyone's saying these ODIs are pointless but is everything that's not a World Cup going to be pointless now? England don't play much ODI cricket ahead of the next World Cup, so these opportunities are actually priceless for players like Phil Salt, Luke Wood and Liam Dawson.

England's scoring rate has been pretty good. If Malan carries on they should get in excess of 250 still.

  5. drinks break

    Eng 157-5published at 30 overs

The runs keep flowing for Dawid Malan. He plays a strong backfoot punch for four, another lovely bit of timing, before getting a bit of luck, mis-timing a reverse sweep past his stumps but sneaks a single.

    Time for a drink.

    Malan 65, Dawson 10

Malan nabs a single from the final ball of Cameron Green's over and keeps the strike.

How many coffees is it acceptable to drink before 6am? Asking for a friend.

  7. Eng 147-5published at 28 overs

Adam Zampa twirls his way through another rapid over and concedes just three singles.

It's been quiet from England, but every now and then Dawid Malan flicks a switch and hits a six out of nowhere. You never know when it's coming.

  8. Eng 144-5published at 27 overs

Pat Cummins recovers well with just two coming from the last three balls, but the damage was done by Malan earlier in the over - 12 from it altogether.

How bold is Dawid Malan's strokeplay? You'd think we were at the back end of a T20. He's gone early, I think.

  10. 6 runs

    Eng 142-5published at 26.3 overs

    Oh, okay then!

Malan picks one up from middle stump and flicks it over square leg for the most effortless six you'll see.

He played a glorious cover drive for four from the previous ball too, so he's in the mood for a productive over.

  11. Eng 132-5published at 26 overs

Good knock from Dawid Malan, who was supposedly fit for England's World Cup final three days ago but they didn't want to 'risk' him.

    A fine response.

50 for Dawid Malanpublished at 25.3 overs

    Eng 130-5

Dawid Malan continues to hold this innings together for England with a 64-ball half-century.

He's played some stunning shots, but with Chris Jordan in next, he needs to bat for a lot longer.

The run map shows Dawid Malan scored 50 with 1 six, 5 fours, 2 twos, and 20 singles for England

    Thanks, Callum.

How are you all holding up? I'm getting horrible flashbacks of getting up at this time to watch England get hammered day after day during last year's Ashes.

Thankfully, this isn't going as terribly, but England have got work to do.

  14. Eng 126-5published at 25 overs

Two dot balls end the over.

Australia's over rate is a quite pathetic 12.1 overs an hour. That's so bad.

Anyway, enough of my moaning. Ffion Wynne will take you through the remainder of the innings.

  16. 6 runs

    Eng 126-5published at 24.4 overs

Hello! Where has that come from?

Full from Pat Cummins, moving in towards the stumps, and Dawid Malan has just plonked it over mid-wicket for the first six of the day.

    Lovely stuff.

Dawid Malan has no option but to bat all the way through for England now. There really isn't much else to come.

  18. dropped catch

Malan dropped on 42published at 24 overs

    Eng 120-5

Again, this would have been sensational.

It's shorter from Adam Zampa and I reckon it surprises Dawid Malan a little bit.

He ends up getting a thick outside edge on it and Alex Carey isn't able to adjust his hands anywhere near quickly enough and it just ricochets off his gloves.

This is a test for Liam Dawson. He's been in England squads so much but with such limited opportunities.

England are not used to being in this position.

  20. Postpublished at 05:20 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2022

Liam Dawson is the new batter.

He has been with England in Pakistan and for the T20 World Cup but has only played three games and batted once.

He's bound to be a little bit rusty.
