That is a gorgeous shot but the problem for Jos Buttler is it's straight to the fielder - did he even see him out there?

It looked promising for England's skipper but it ends in a rather unusual demise.

    This feels very soft.

Jos Buttler looks to go over the top off Adam Zampa. I presume he's thinking over cover, where there is a gap, but he ends up going straighter than that and picks out Ashton Agar at long-off.

England are in a spot of trouble.

Today the bowlers had the very rare opportunity to bowl on a pitch adjacent to the match pitch because the one they did use is being replaced by a new one which is being put in for the Test match. It's rare in Australia to do that, but everywhere else in the world, there is a pitch you can bowl on out in the middle before a game.

Australia are starting to sense they might need a wicket, and Pat Cummins brings himself back into the attack.

Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan take the partnership above 50. It's been at less than a run-a-ball, but it is helping England build a platform to potentially accelerate later on.

Six runs and a wide off Cummins' sixth over.

It's a good pitch. The ball is nipping a bit but I'd say 270 would be par, at a minimum.

Oh. An England fan has put two pieces of tissue - one for each ear - under his sunglasses. They are just dangling down.

I am slightly worried about the top of his head...

Has he not heard of a hat?

I'm enjoying the sedate nature of this match after the T20 stuff which has just been.

Six runs from Adam Zampa's second over.

Apparently it's 23 degrees at the Adelaide Oval and there's a little breeze too. Don't those conditions sound just perfect for watching cricket?

Mitchell Starc is into his seventh over and we've only had 20 or so overs in the game. Normally, Starc is used at the death but he's bowled a third of the overs so far.

  10. Eng 105-4published at 21 overs

    Oh! Lovely bowling.

Mitchell Starc manages to square Jos Buttler up a little bit but the ball slides past the outside edge.

He's got through seven overs already. Will he be saved until the death now?

I'm intrigued to see how Jos Buttler plays today. He says all the right things like how every game matters, but realistically, it's like going back to work between Christmas and New Year's Eve.

A first look at the leg-spin of Adam Zampa.

England are watchful at the moment, taking four runs from the over.

    We'll have Ben Cotton, Henry.

He's played for Derbyshire and Northamptonshire.

Starting to sense we might be a bit light on batting...

We've got Luke Wood and Olly Stone coming in at 10 and 11 for England today. How many more can we get in to our Materials XI?

Daniel Norcross has clearly got jetlag because he's text us from the early hours in England to suggest Frank Woolley.

  15. Eng 97-4published at 19 overs

Three runs off Mitchell Starc's latest over.

Australia are still well on top, but Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler are a dangerous partnership for the hosts.

Mitchell Starc's bowling: 11% full, 65% good length and 24% short. 6 overs, 0 maidens, went for 26 runs, took 1 wickets with an economy of 4.33.

Oh, that would have been a stunner. That was hit very, very hard and it almost stuck in there for Ashton Agar.

    Eng 94-4

    Australia can't catch...

No, I'm messing. That would have been an absolute blinder from Ashton Agar at backward point.

Dawid Malan smashes a cut shot away, and Agar flies to his left, which is his stronger side, but the ball doesn't stick.

Mike Hussey, who is on the TV comms, said "it would have been the catch of the summer in the very first game".

That will be a painful one. He's just holding it behind his back, which is what cricketers do. Because if you don't look at it, it doesn't hurt.

  19. dropped catch

Buttler dropped on 15published at 18 overs

    Eng 94-4

Ish. It's technically a chance, but a tough one.

The England skipper crunches a straight drive - at 126.4 kmph, apparently - and Marcus Stoinis sticks out his left hand, looking to take a catch in his follow through, but it just grazes his fingers and continues to mid-off.

They say you always feel better at the end of a run, but it's just not true is it? My chest was burning, my legs are sore and they still hurt today. I can barely sit down.

    It just isn't worth it.
