That's the only ball we've seen Phil Salt actually trying to defend. He had played and missed at a few but they were aggressive shots, and again we're just seeing a bit of assistance from the pitch for Pat Cummins.

    Gone! Edged to second slip.

A better line, and most importantly length, from Pat Cummins and he draws the edge of a defending Phil Salt. Steve Smith isn't going to drop those either.

Australia will be glad to see the back of Salt because he can be very dangerous if he's allowed to stay around.

Oh, he's taken that from half a foot outside off stump! Take that from the coach's manual!

A genuine throw-down, just a half-volley. No threat to Phil Salt whatsoever.

I went to watch Phil Salt a few times for Lancashire in the summer and he is a serious player down the ground.

He shows that again, crunching a nothing delivery from Pat Cummins back past mid-off for his second boundary.

He then plays a outrageous flick over square leg to pick up another four.

Salt has 14 so far. There's three boundaries in there.

It's been an excellent start, there's just enough nip to keep the bowlers interested.

England looked like they'd post a big score in the first over, but Pat Cummins and now Mitchell Starc have come back well since then.

They've dropped a little bit shorter and Jason Roy, who has been hit in the stomach by a ball that came back in from Starc, and Phil Salt are struggling to get the ball off the square at the moment.

Everything that's full, both batters are playing those big booming drives. But there have been a couple of plays and misses, suggesting there's a little bit in the pitch - but nothing in the air.

  9. Eng 6-0published at 2 overs

Phil Salt looked shaky in the T20 World Cup final on Sunday. It was understandable, he was short of cricket, and playing in his first final for England.

He looks in much better touch here, but struggles to find the gap against Pat Cummins. He picks out mid-on twice with drives, and Cummins adjusts his length to beat the outside edge to end the over.

    Compelling stuff.

There were clear signs of aggression from both openers, every ball they got in their arc was punched at. It's a very different style of play that we're used to.

Phil Salt swings and misses at his second ball, before picking out mid-off to end the over.

It looks a good pitch based on those first six balls.

That is a glorious shot. There's not much swing for Starc.

I did tell you that Phil Salt likes a boundary.

He pumps his first ball back down the ground and away for four.

    Lovely stuff.

Jason Roy lets the first ball go through to Alex Carey, before driving to mid-on.

Some of the Barmy Army are in. They are signing Jerusalem currently.

The players are out in the middle.

Jason Roy, who will feel like he has a little bit of a point to prove, will face up to Mitchell Starc.

England to deal in boundaries? Yes, please.

England have scored 53% of their runs from boundaries in men’s ODIs in 2022, the best rate of any full member side. Australia's rate is 45%.Image source, Getty Images/BBC Sport

Phil Salt, who presented Luke Wood with his cap a short while ago, will be opening the batting alongside a returning Jason Roy in around five minutes time.

Based on this, expect him to go hard...

England's Phil Salt has hit a boundary every 4.9 balls in men’s ODIs in 2022, the second most frequent of any player (min. 40 balls faced).Image source, Getty Images/BBC Sport

Oh, also, the thought of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne batting together is enough to send a shudder through anyone at 3am in the morning.

Not sure I've prepared mentally for that.

England will have celebrated like they should, but they have known about this quick turnaround for a while now.

They'll have enjoyed themselves but as Jos Buttler said, they don't play many ODIs before the World Cup so they've got to take every opportunity they can.

One process has come to the end in the T20 World Cup but this is the start of a new cycle now. It's just the way it is, the schedule is relentless - India are playing out in New Zealand now as well.
