The Lightning have wrestled back the initiative.

Luke Wood had Leus du Plooy caught by Tom Bailey for 33 off 16 with three sixes and Anuj Dal and loanee Aneurin Donald have taken their time to get going.

Bailey's three overs have gone for just 15 runs.

  3. Tea at Trent Bridgepublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 85-1

A satisfactory afternoon for Essex, having begun their second innings facing a 144-run deficit.

Nick Browne was the only batter dismissed - lbw to Lyndon James for 27 - and Notts may regret dropping Alastair Cook, who is 32 not out.

Matthew Montgomery made 177 earlier in the day as Notts added 116 to their overnight 326-5 before being bowled out.

  4. Glamorgan are aheadpublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Sussex 481 v Glamorgan 123 & 359-3

Marnus Labuschagne cuts one away down towards a huge gap at third man and he and Carlson run for three.

That takes Glamorgan into the lead, which is quite some effort considering they started this innings 358 behind.

Carlson and Labuschagne are having a lovely time by the Sussex seaside.

    Notts 422 v Essex 298 & 84-1

Tom Westley drives Lyndon Jones through cover for four and a second boundary follows to end the over as he runs it down past a diving first slip to third man. Westley is 17 not out.

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

From the depths of despair on the second afternoon, Glamorgan are within sight of a lead despite being 358 runs behind on first innings.

Marnus Labuschagne and Kiran Carlson have both reached centuries in the afternoon against a labouring Sussex attack without England paceman Ollie Robinson.

He hasn’t appeared on the field after lunch and the new ball did not hold too many terrors for two well set-batters.

In his absence, acting skipper Kiran Carlson has made the most of lives on three and 21 as he took the attack to Sussex, out scoring the illustrious Australian.

But Labuschagne, watchful most of the time, broke out of his vigil to smash Fynn Hudson-Prentice for successive fours to reach his hundred as well.

WICKET & DECLARATION Robinson st Bracey b Gohar 67published at 15:35 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Gloucestershire 292 v Durham 445 & 272-4 dec

Robinson makes 67 from 36 balls but is stumped by James Bracey off the bowling of Zafar Gohar trying for his fourth six to go with his nine fours.

With that, Durham have declared. The lead is 425. Tea will be taken now too, 25 minutes early. Will nobody think of the caterers?!

Michael Jones has earned his scran... 121 not out from 141 balls with 11 fours and five maximums.

46 overs remain in the day with another 96 at Durham's disposal tomorrow too.

Kiran Carlson helps himself to two more off Jack Carson and that sees the score tick over the 350 mark.

This partnership is now worth 228 runs and they have scored 128 since lunch alone.

With no Ollie Robinson out there, the Sussex attack is struggling in the sunshine.

Richard: "Nuts that @englandcricket, external give away advantage by letting Aussies play county cricket. #bbccricket, external"

We heard one cricket observer earlier this week say that players as good as Labuschagne or Smith can score runs anywhere, in any conditions, at any time.

Craig Overton leads the Somerset players off the field after taking five wicketsImage source, Rex Features

Somerset players can rightly congratulate themselves on an innings victory and their first win of the season.

They have wrapped it up with four-and-a-half sessions to spare and there was probably plenty of chat in the field about what to do with that free time.

Grab the kit and get on the bus back to Taunton for a cider or two, or maybe stay on and have a cheeky night out in London.

Either way, it's a good dilemma to have!

  11. Postpublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 67-1

LPW has a short leg in for Tom Westley, but the Essex skipper flicks the last ball of his over away fine for four runs.

    Worcs 178-4 - target 271

It's a cliche, perhaps, but this really is attritional stuff now at New Road.

Just one run from the latest Will Davis over for Leicestershire.

Gareth Roderick is 52 not out, Brett D'Oliveira has three and Worcestershire need another 93 to win.

  13. 50 runs

off 25 balls for Ollie Robinsonpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Gloucestershire 292 v Durham 445 & 250-3

He's here for a good time, not a long time.

After bringing up his 14th first-class half-century with a paddled single, he's reverse swept Zafar Gohar for four to take the Durham lead well over 400.

    Tom HartleyImage source, PA Media

Tom Hartley gets a modicum of revenge on Derbyshire's Wayne Madsen as he catches him off Danny Lamb for 50, which came from 35 balls, four of which were sent over the ropes.

Hartley also trapped Luis Reece lbw for 23 but Leus du Plooy is warming up, unbeaten on 19 with eight overs to come.

WICKET Browne lbw James 27published at 15:18 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 62-1

Lyndon James comes in from round the wicket, Nick Browne plays down the wrong line and he is gone.

A solid opening partnership for Essex but Tom Westley is walking out now to join Alastair Cook, who is 28 not out.

  16. Postpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Gloucestershire 292 v Durham 445 & 240-3

Ollie Robinson has just taken 16 off a single Jack Taylor over.

He has 37 off 13 balls. Some player, nomatter what colour the ball is.

The lead is up to 393.

50 overs left today and 96 tomorrow with the pitch expected to deteriorate. A commanding position, to say the least.

  17. Postpublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 61-0

That's too full by LPW and Nick Browne drives through backward point for his third boundary. He has 27 not out and the Essex deficit is now 82.

    Breaking

    Middlesex 175 & 216 v Somerset 404

Ryan Higgins takes on a Craig Overton short ball and holes out to Lewis Gregory at deep fine leg.

Overton has 5-46 and Somerset have won by an innings for their first win of the summer.

Outstanding team performance from the Cider Boys. A century for George Bartlett and a partnership of 183 with captain Tom Abell as they recovered from 10-2 to post 404.

Then five wickets for Matt Henry in the first innings and five for Overton today.

A fourth defeat of the season for Middlesex and as in the other three losses, their batting has let them down.

  19. wicket

WICKET Bamber b Leach 0published at 15:09 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Middlesex 175 & 216-9 v Somerset 404

    Somerset can smell victory now!

Jack Leach is far too good for tail-ender Ethan Bamber as he pitches one full and it beats Bamber's defences and cannons into the stumps.

Middlesex trail by 13 and are facing an innings defeat.

  20. 100 runs

for Marnus Labuschagnepublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Sussex 481 v Glamorgan 123 & 328-3

Marnus Labuschagne pulls Finn Hudson-Prentice through midwicket to move to 100 from 185 balls with 13 four and three sixes.

A vital innings for Glamorgan and Australia won't be unhappy with it either, you'd expect.

    A 29th first-class century for the 28-year-old.
