    Oh!

Joe Root plays the Roop - the Root Scoop to his 11th ball.

And again a ball later! He has hardly made contact with either.

Ireland are actually going to look at the lbw...

Ollie Pope was ticking along nicely at the start, then he got into a bit of a rut. Credit to him for sticking around, not giving his wicket away. This is what this England team is do well, they are aggressive but not reckless anymore .

Another lbw appeal... Ever since I said that change of ball hadn't worked for Ireland they have got this new one talking.

Mark Adair pleads - he has currently got figures of 0-105 to his name - but the umpire shakes his head.

There's a play and miss by Root later in the over too.

George Goddard: Re Sam Beale (14:04 BST). I therefore assume that you thought England's last away Ashes were pointless too then? As was our tour of India? Ireland have shown over the last 4 years that they can mix with the best in 50 over cricket. What would 4 years of regular Tests have done?

  5. Eng 369-2published at 62 overs

Joe Root drives a couple, what he will hope are the first two of many runs this summer.

Here's how Ireland, finally, saw off Ben Duckett...

  6. Eng 367-2published at 61.2 overs

Adair seemed to suggest Root got a little inside edge on that lbw shout. Ultra Edge confirms it.

This is Root's first red-ball innings since February.

This is a big innings for Joe Root. He stands by the fact that going to the IPL was the right thing to do before the Ashes. He's not played all that much, he's not had much time with the bat in hand in game situations. This is big for him

Big appeal for lbw at the end of Mark Adair's over!

Joe Root was trying to play across his front pad. That looked close to me.

Ireland have two reviews left but opt against it.

Duckett's 182 is the highest score by an England opener not named Cook since Marcus Trescothick made 193 v Pakistan in Multan in 2005.

Ben Duckett did manage to thwack this six before he was out...

  11. Eng 361-2published at 60 overs

    Lead by 189

Having sat and watched Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope rack up a stand of 252, Joe Root now skips to the middle before defending his first ball.

Well bowled. I think it's bit of fatigue setting in for Ben Duckett. He had a bit of a flail at it, no foot movement. Well done Ben Duckett.

    Duckett b Hume 182 (Eng 361-2)

    Bowled 'im!

Lord's rises as Ben Duckett falls for 182 from 178 balls. He's tried another swipe off seamer Hume but this time the ball nips off the pitch and clatters into off stump.

    A great innings ends.

  14. Eng 357-1published at 59.2 overs

The change of ball has, errrm, not worked for Ireland.

Ben Duckett thrashes the ball for four off seamer Graham Hume.

For the Irish players, they've got to drink in the atmosphere, enjoy the day, try and get a few wickets and go again for the second innings.

  16. Postpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 2 June 2023

How will Ireland get better if they don't play Tests?

The umpires are changing the ball. It has seemingly gone out of shape.

  18. Eng 353-1published at 59 overs

The designer of the Lord's balcony obviously didn't think of the coaches. England's Marcus Trescothick is up there looking absolutely freezing with the hood of his coat up over his cap.

The conditions may be glorious on the field but it looks to be cold up there in the shade.

Ollie Pope, meanwhile, has called for a new pair of gloves. Tuck in.

It hasn't been wild slogging, it's been dismantling shots. Really good cricket so far.
