  3. Umpire reviewpublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 23 June 2023

Groundhog day as Annabel Sutherland drills it low and straight and Sophie Ecclestone deflects it on to the stumps.

Kim Garth looks to have got her back behind the line but the umpires have decided to take a look anyway.

  4. Aus 396-8published at 108 overs

The run-rate has slowed as Annabel Sutherland moves closer to the milestone. She's happy to take a single off Kate Cross' second ball and then leave Kim Garth to block out the rest of the over.

  5. How's Stat?!published at 12:41 British Summer Time 23 June 2023

This is now the most Sophie Ecclestone has ever bowed in a Test innings.

Her previous most was 38 overs in India's second innings during their Test match 12 months ago, where she took 4-118.

She took 4-88 in the first innings in that Test, totalling 64 overs bowled for that Test.

  6. Aus 396-9published at 12:39 British Summer Time 23 June 2023

Kim Garth has a solid defensive technique. She's happy to do a job for her team and block Sophie Ecclestone out as Annabel Sutherland moves within striking distance of a century.

Rick Harris: For goodness sake, Kate Cross - have you learned nothing from yesterday? If you bowl half-volleys at Aussie batters, they will drive you for four all day long. England gave them 80+ runs like this yesterday, and still doing it today. Wise up!

Kate Cross' 20 overs on day one went for 86 runs at an average of 4.3. Her three overs earlier today have gone for just four runs, at a rate of 1.33, a significant improvement.

  9. Aus 394-8published at 106 overs

Kate Cross back into the attack as Australia move towards 400 and seize the initiative in this contest. Annabel Sutherland flicks her third ball into the leg side to add another single.

Cross then hits Kim Garth on the pad and half-heartedly appeals for lbw, but that was clearly slipping down the leg side.

Garth then waggles her bat at one outside off stump, but it misses the edge.

Nearly 400 for 8 wickets and a well set batter at the crease. I can't understand why Australia don't declare, it's the only smart thing to do.

  11. Aus 393-8published at 105 overs

Annabel Sutherland is 86 not out after she swept Sophie Ecclestone's first delivery to the boundary before picking up a single to keep the strike. She'll be eyeing a maiden international century here.

I think Australia will want as many runs on the board to play with.

  13. ouch!

    Aus 388-8published at 104 overs

Annabel Sutherland drills one back along the ground and Lauren Bell sticks out a boot to stop the ball. She's down on her haunches and grimaces. But is okay, thankfully.

Pretty sure more fail after a 100 than before. Sensing 8% get out in the 90's but 28% out just after a ton. Might be horribly wrong, of course I saw Catherine Sciver-Brunt yesterday at Trent Bridge. Looked in really good shape. I wonder what might happen if she was opening the bowling for England today. Just saying...

    Andy Zaltzman
Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

For today’s question to test your cricketing guesswork skills, we are looking at the so-called 'Nervous Nineties'.

Ellyse Perry became the 117th international cricketer to experience the bittersweet success-failure cocktail of being out for 99, joining a club whose members include her team-mate Jess Jonassen, mid-20th-century England legend Betty Snowball, Geoffrey Boycott (twice out for 99) and Sachin Tendulkar (all-time international 99 champion with three dismissals a run short of three figures).

As a whole, in the history of Test cricket, men’s and women’s, in what percentage of innings of 90-plus, has the batter been out before reaching 100? (Ignoring innings in which players finished not out in the 90s.)

And what percentage of centuries have ended with the hundred-maker being out for 100 to 109? (Again, ignoring innings ending not out in the 100s.)

  16. Aus 385-8published at 103 overs

Sophie Ecclestone rattles through another over. On her final ball Amy Jones whips the bails off after Annabel Sutherland over balances a little, but she has plenty behind the line.

I think what let Heather Knight down was the bowlers' inability to have discipline, so she had to have the ability to go more defensive and wrestle that pressure back.

  18. Aus 384-8published at 102 overs

A couple of balls later Kim Garth drives it through the covers for a couple. After 13 balls without scoring she's off the mark.

  19. Garth not outpublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 23 June 2023

That was a review more in hope than desperation from England. The ball was going on to miss leg stump.

  20. England reviewpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 23 June 2023

Lauren Bell has hit Kim Garth high on the pad.

It's given not out, but England have reviewed.
