  1. Aus 387-6published at 99 overs

Mitchell Starc comes out to the middle. Two new batters at the crease - exactly what India wanted this morning.

Hello? Shardul Thakur, going over the wicket to Starc, gets one to fizz off the surface as the Aussie left-hander flails his bat outside the off stump.

We have a game on our hands.

That's where you bowl to him. You get him to drag it on.

I did not see that coming.

Smith, up in that changing room, will be absolutely filthy with himself.

    Smith b Thakur 121 (387-6)

    Chopped on!

Steve Smith cannot believe what he has done.

He completely misreads the pace of Shardul Thakur's first delivery outside the off stump and a thick edge smashes into the stumps.

    India are jubilant.

There has been a bit in the pitch all day. It has been a very good cricket wicket.

  6. Aus 387-5published at 98 overs

A touch for fortune for Alex Carey as he goes for an expansive drive that comes off the inside edge and disappears fine for four.

There will be a change bowling at the other end. Shardul Thakur comes into the attack.

  7. Aus 382-4published at 97.3 overs

Oof, that is a beauty from Umesh Yadav.

A perfect line and length that leaps off the surface and flashes past Steve Smith's outside edge.

Smith is open-mouthed. That came out of nowhere.

    Encouragement for India.

Michael: Please could the Edgbaston groundsman water and fertilise the pitch as a matter of urgency.

Australia are still in the driving seat.

Steve Smith is as hungry as anybody in the world for runs. They will try to get as many as they can.

Alex Carey's century during the last Australian summer against South Africa was the first by a Australia wicketkeeper for almost 10 years.

It has been a good first hour for India. They needed a couple of wickets and that is what they have got.

They have leaked a few runs but they have attacked so that is alright.

It has been much better bowling. It looks as though they have had plans for every batter.

  13. drinks break

    Drinks - Aus 382-5published at 97 overs

That looked to be Rohit Sharma's thinking. We have not seen the Hawk-Eye replay yet though.

Mohammed Shami beats Alex Carey's defences the next delivery but again his appeal his turned down. That looked a more optmistic shout though and the umpire again says no.

Still, that completes a positive start to the morning for India as the drinks comes out to the middle.

It looked straight. It looked full.

It maybe would have missed leg stump.

  15. Aus 382-5published at 96.5 overs

Mohammed Shami bowls around the wicket to new batter Alex Carey. He goes full, straight and smacks him on the pads.

Shami leaps into the air, but umpire Chris Gaffaney says now.

It looked a decent shout but Rohit Sharma declines the review.

Steve Smith doing Steve Smith things.

    I'd get used to it.

  17. Aus 378-5published at 96 overs

With Ravichandran Ashwin carrying the drinks it is Umesh Yadav who is chucked the ball for the first change of the day.

A fielder is brought in to a catching position a short mid-on to try and give Steve Smith something to think about. A containing job on Smith and attack the new batter at the other end looks to be the plan for India.

After a ferocious burst from the new-ball bowlers, now would be a really handy time to bring the best spinner in the world on.

Just finished my PE GCSE exam. Had a lovely question about the open-closed nature of a bowling action. May have wrote a bit more than necessary.

That should surely be worth some bonus marks?

  20. Aus 376-5published at 95 overs

A brilliant over from Mohammed Shami ends with new batter Alex Carey playing a nervy inside edge onto his pads and the ball loops into a gap in the off side.

After toiling for so long India are fighting their way back into this match.

There is still a certain Mr Steven Peter Devereux Smith unbeaten at the other end though....
