I have really liked Head's aggression. He has played how the England team have played in the last year. It has been impressive how he has played his way while Smith has been ticking along at the other end.

    Well played, Head.

    He has been entertaining.

  3. 150 runs

150 for Travis Headpublished at 88.2 overs

    Aus 343-3

Travis Head head cuts a wide delivery backward of point to bring up his 150!

That has been a really fine innings. He came to the middle when Australia were wobbling slightly but he has dragged his side into a commanding position.

Travis Head has a very old fashioned moustache. He looks like he should be in Blackadder.

Really warm at The Oval today. I'm in the outside bit of the press box, so slightly concerned about the temperature of my laptop. It might have to go to go in the fridge. It's been done before.

    India really need wickets here.

  7. Aus 339-3published at 88 overs

Just the one run off Mohammed Siraj's latest over courtesy of a wild bouncer that goes way over Steve Smith's head.

Smith, shuffling across his crease again, looks to be carrying on where he left off yesterday.

    Andy Zaltzman
Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

This is Steve Smith's third Test century at The Oval. The only other non-England player to do that is Bruce Mitchell, who played either side of the Second World War for South Africa.

It is Smith's seventh hundred in England. Only two non-England batters have scored as many - Don Bradman (11) and Steve Waugh, who also had seven.

  10. Aus 338-3published at 87 overs

Mohammed Shami opens at the other end for India. He bowls around the wicket to left-hander Travis Head, who goes for a pretty wild swipe outside his off stump and the ball flies through to the wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat.

Head remains two away from a 150.

This is a relatively new ball remember so there should still be plenty of shine for the seamers early on.

Covers are off, the crowd is humming, a crucial first hour awaits. What more could I wish for? Oh yes, I could wish to actually be there rather than being at work watching live text at work.

We have got a way of winding up Steve Smith before the first Ashes Test...

  13. Aus 336-3published at 86 overs

Well, that was an eventful first over.

Steve Smith was fuming with spider cam after its shadow was cast across the square. It looks rather sheepish as it retreats into the distance.

Mohammed Siraj the bowls a beauty that fizzes past Smith's outside edge, giving him a glare for good measure.

There's Smith's hundred. Two balls it has taken him!

It says a lot about him. There is something perverse about him and that encapsulates it.

  15. 100 runs

100 for Steve Smithpublished at 85.3 overs

    Aus 336-3

I don't think this will be the only time I write this over the next few weeks:

Steve Smith smacks the next delivery for another four to bring up his 31st Test century.

A stern-faced Smith raises his bat to warm applause from the crowd and his team-mates on the balcony.

    An ominous sign for England.

  17. Aus 332-3published at 85.2 overs

Travis Head pushes the first ball into the on side for a single.

Steve Smith then clips his first delivery off the pads through deep square leg and over the rope.

    Smith on to 99....

The India players get into a quick huddle before making their way to the middle, swiftly followed by Steve Smith and Travis Head.

The Oval is looking glorious with bright sun and clear blue skies overhead.

Mohammed Siraj will open the bowling for India with two slips and a gully in place.

India wicketkeeper KS Bharat, speaking to TMS: "We spoke about a couple of gameplans. Today it is a fresh day. We are looking to bowl hard and wait for good things to happen.

"England is a place you can't trust the weather. You have to be up to bowl or bat first."
