  1. NZ 51-2published at 10 overs

    Target 312

    Shot.

Reece Topley offers up some width again and Henry Nicholls absolutely hammers the ball through the off side for four runs.

The Kiwis need plenty more where that come if they are to keep up with the run rate, which is now creeping up over 6.5 an over.

  3. NZ 46-2published at 9 overs

Daryl Mitchell is the new batter and immediately off the mark with a two through backward square.

A leg-side delivery from David Willey is then helped on its way via Mitchell's pads and the ball fizzes away for five wides.

An expensive over in the end - 11 from it - but it did also yield a wicket.

Willey there was absolutely spot on. It's a good length ball, going through at the top of the stump height. All Young can do is nick it.

  5. wicket

    Young c Buttler b Willey 24 (NZ 38-2)

England will be more than pretty happy now.

It is another fine delivery from David Willey angling the ball across Will Young, who feathers an edge through to Jos Buttler.

New Zealand in a bit of a hole.

I think England will be pretty happy with this start. Both opening bowlers have gone for 17 runs off their four overs. New Zealand haven't really made a serious punch to put a hole in this target. They have got batting to come with Mitchell and Latham, but with Southee and Lister unlikely to bat, they need to do a lot at the top order.

Root does not work at 3, play him at 4 for the World Cup, and against Ireland for some more confidence, and throw in Malan at 3 with Bairstow and Roy opening. Roy has not been in the best form lately, but he hasn't done much wrong for England, and when he gets going, he can be a fantastic player.

  8. NZ 35-1published at 8 overs

    Target 312

Reece Topley bowls back-of-a-length but the pitch is not very quick, so the ball just sits up invitingly for Will Young, who pulls confidently away for four.

A fine diving stop at gully from Joe Root denies Young another boundary next ball.

  9. Postpublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 15 September 2023

This is the only wicket to fall so far thanks to some really sharp work by Jos Buttler.

  10. NZ 27-1published at 7 overs

Just the single from David Willey's over. Not too many fireworks in the power play from New Zealand so far, with just the three boundaries.

It continues to look a tricky surface to bat on, which makes Dawid Malan's innings all the more impressive.

  11. NZ 26-1published at 6 overs

New batter Henry Nicholls joins Will Young in the middle.

He goes for a wild swing at a wide one from Reece Topley with his first ball and is fortunate not to feather through to Buttler.

Incidentally, it is unlikely Tim Southee will bat this innings given the thumb injury he suffered earlier, though we have had no confirmation either way from the Black Caps camp.

That's a brilliant bit of keeping from Buttler. Why was Conway's bat in his wrong hand?

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.2 overs

Conway run out (Buttler) 9 (NZ 24-1)

He is in trouble! Brilliant work from Buttler and England have an early breakthrough.

It was a leg-side delivery that flicked off Will Young's pads. It was Conway's call but Buttler quickly threw off his right glove and hurled the ball at the stumps.

  15. Umpire reviewpublished at 5.2 overs

Direct hit from Jos Buttler as New Zealand look to pinch a single - is Devon Conway in trouble here?

    The umpires send it upstairs...

  16. NZ 23-0published at 5 overs

Frustration for David Willey as he finds the edge of Will Young's bat, but the ball is always going downwards before flying wide of the slip fielder and away for four.

Young shares a smile as he punches gloves with Devon Conway at the end of the over.

Conway has deserved that. He's waited, he's not chanced and he's been patient, a bit like Malan.

  19. NZ 19-0published at 4 overs

    Target 312

After being watchful in Reece Topley's first over Devon Conway pounces onto a wider, fuller delivery and slashes the ball through backward point for four.

    That was beautifully timed.

  20. NZ 11-0published at 3 overs

Good delivery from left-armer David Willey bowling across right-hander Will Young and beating the outside edge. Both England bowlers have found a probing line so far.

The New Zealand openers share singles before Young manages to squeeze a mistimed drive past mid-on and New Zealand run three.
