That's not good for New Zealand, Tim Southee is such a key, experienced part of this Black Caps side.

Meanwhile, Reece Topley is finding some life in this pitch as he gets one to leap up outside Devon Conway's off stump.

Conway, with two slips lurking, takes no risks and plays out a maiden.

Tim Southee has had an x-ray and has fractured and dislocated a bone in his right thumb that he sustained while fielding. A further assessment will take place tomorrow to establish his recovery.

Finn Allen has been cleared of any fracture or break after hurting the little finger on his right hand.

  3. NZ 4-0published at 1 over

Will Young gets off the mark with a well-timed punch square into the off side for four.

Since India scored 326-8 to beat England in 2002 no team batting second has made 300 at Lord's.

In recent games they have really struggled. India scored 146 last year, Pakistan 195 in 2021. In the 2019 World Cup South Africa scored 259, England 221, New Zealand 157, Bangladesh 221 and in that famous final England matched New Zealand's 241.

Sam Curran was typically busy at the crease before he played down the wrong line to Matt Henry. A classic Lord's dismissal with the slope.

Bit of housekeeping during the interval as we digest the last few England wickets to fall towards the back end of the innings.

Liam Livingstone felt compelled to review this after he was struck on the pad by Kyle Jamieson.

Depending on your point of view it was a scratchy knock, or one where he hung around on a surface which did not suit his game to contribute.

An impressive innings from Dawid Malan provided the backbone of England's total. Here's the best bits from his 127 off 114 balls.

England will be absolutely delighted to have 311 on the board on a wicket where some batters have struggled to time the ball. Only really Dawid Malan looked comfortable.

I think they have enough runs and enough skill in their bowling attack to make the most of this wicket. Ill like to see how Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone get on.

New Zealand's Trent Boult has three catches as a substitute fielder today. In ODI cricket, the record for the most catches by a substitute fielder in an innings is four, set by Doug Bracewell in 1980.

    That's a way to finish.

  15. 6 runs

    Eng 311-9published at 50 overs

Brydon Carse hits the last ball of England's innings for six!

Carse uses his leavers to Daryl Mitchell and wallops it over long-off for a maximum.

That should give him, and England, some momentum heading into the field.

  16. Eng 305-0published at 49.5 overs

Reece Topley is off the mark with a single off Daryl Mitchell, followed by a big swing and a miss from Brydon Carse.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 49.3 overs

    Willey c sub (Boult) b Mitchell 19

More canny bowling from Daryl Mitchell.

David Willey attempts to go down town. He gets the height but not the distance and Trent Boult, on as a substitute, safely pouches another catch.

  18. dropped catch

Carse dropped on ninepublished at 49.2 overs

Heaved down the ground by Brydon Carse off Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips dives forward, but he cannot quite get his fingers under the ball.

  19. Eng 301-8published at 49 overs

More inventiveness from David Willey as he scoops Matt Henry over the wicketkeeper's head and down to the boundary for four.

    Brilliant execution.
