Netherlands need something to happen and have turned to Bas de Leede.

He's a wholehearted cricketer. He's entertaining to watch because he gives it everything in every facet of the game.

He's become quite a key part of this side.

  2. NZ 96-1published at 19 overs

Bas de Leede is into the attack as the Netherlands look to find a breakthrough.

The all-rounder took four across this and the final phase of the Pakistan innings on Friday.

A tidy enough start with five runs coming off his first over.

He got his bat stuck in the pitch alongside and he was done for all money.

He was well and truly gone. That was a very, very dicey run - at best.

  4. NZ 92-1published at 18.2 overs

Oh, Rachin Ravindra. You lucky boy.

He's ball watching as he takes a quick single and his bat ends up getting jammed in some soil as he tries to slide it in.

He would have been out with a direct hit.

Interesting that so far, the Dutch have not had two seamers operating in tandem. There has always been a spinner on the go.

New Zealand will have had a quick chat about possibilities of a total.

They'll try to get what they can in the next block and, if they've got wickets in hands, that's when they can set their sights really high.

  6. NZ 91-1published at 18 overs

Another change of bowling as Scott Edwards rotates his bowling options.

Aryan Dutt returns and concedes just one single from his fifth over.

It feels like New Zealand have lost some momentum.

Here's how Roelof van der Merwe picked up the wicket of Devon Conway a few overs ago.

Will Young will be thinking about his place in the side with Kane Williamson knocking on the door in terms of fitness.

The bloke he's up against is at the other end and Ravindra was pretty good the other night!

  9. NZ 90-1published at 17 overs

Good from Will Young. He gets down early and crunches a sweep off Roelof van der Merwe away to the square-leg boundary.

That will get Van der Merwe and Scott Edwards thinking about their field.

Young averages 49 against left-arm spin in ODIs and he has looked comfortable against Van der Merwe so far.

  10. NZ 83-1published at 16 overs

    Young 40, Ravindra 5

Another good over from the Netherlands with Colin Ackermann conceding just two singles.

I suspect we'll see New Zealand up the ante a pretty long way from the end of the innings today. With Mitchell Santner down to come in at eight they have plenty of depth to their batting.

The players coming in next will look forward to having a hit because the conditions look pretty good to me.

  12. NZ 81-1published at 15 overs

Nice symmetry to the 15th over as Roelof van der Merwe goes dot, one, dot, one, dot, one.

The last five overs have seen 18 runs added for the loss of Devon Conway. The Netherlands have wrestled back some control well.

After those three maidens, New Zealand have kicked into gear quite nicely. They needed to regroup and so far, 78-1 is not a bad grounding.

  14. NZ 78-1published at 14 overs

Double spin for the Netherlands as Colin Ackermann, who got the big wicket of Pakistan captain Babar Azam on Friday, comes into the attack.

Will Young drops deep into his crease against the off-spinner and finds the point boundary with a lovely cut shot.

    Young looks in decent nick.

  15. How's stat?!published at 10:28 British Summer Time 9 October 2023

Prior to this tournament, Roelof van der Merwe had an ODI bowling average of 28 against left-handers. It proved to be the trick in getting Devon Conway out.

  16. NZ 71-1published at 13 overs

Rachin Ravindra, another of New Zealand's centurions against England, is the new batter.

It's going to be tough for Ravindra to match that innings.

He's off the mark straight away.

Bas de Leede takes a good catch. Conway was just trying to get a movement. The numbers say you either get Conway below 10 or you are chasing leather all game. He was on for a monster score, that is a big wicket.

Breakthrough! Big Roelof van der Merwe loves it!

Devon Conway looks to use his feet and hit Van der Merwe over long-on/mid-wicket but he doesn't connect cleanly.

The bat may possibly twist a little in his hand and it ends up going to Bas de Leede on the mid-wicket boundary.

Van der Merwe lets out a huge scream in delight, with veins popping out of his neck in joy.

The Dutch needed this little bit of aggression. They had those three maidens, but Ryan Klein bowled short and wide and you need more than that.
