As Ffion says, Sophie Ecclestone’s workload in Test matches is massive. Across the games she’s played, she averages bowling 27.3 overs per innings. That’s more than half an ODI innings on her own.

Sophie Ecclestone's workload is going to be something to keep an eye on over the next four days.

She is used to bowling a lot in England's Tests - against India in 2021 she bowled 64 overs, and another 46 in an innings against Australia in the summer.

It's worked very well for Heather Knight, with Ecclestone's consistency allowing her to hold up an end economically and rotate her seamers, but this time she's on her way back from shoulder surgery.

And the batters have consciously targeted Ecclestone here which adds another layer of curiosity that we rarely see. But she does have Charlie Dean as another spin option this time, which might ease the pressure on her.

Lauren Filer continues to challenge Shubha Satheesh with the short stuff and it very nearly pays off.

Satheesh takes it on again but doesn't middle the pull shot.

The ball goes off the top-edge and hangs in the air, only to drop just short of the fielder at deep backward square.

Sophia Dunkley gives chase and does well to flick the ball back just before it reaches the rope, saving a run.

It is actually a rope for this match. Something of a rarity in the professional game these days.

Lauren Filer hits Shubha Satheesh with a bumper to start the over but the India batter is not fazed.

Two balls later she gets another bouncer and calmly pulls it away behind square for four.

A punch through the covers brings four more as the ball just beats Kate Cross in a race to the rope. That brings up the 100 partnership.

Good start from Sophie Ecclestone at the other end - and nearly a run out from the last ball.

Jemimah Rodrigues defends towards backward point and Satheesh Shubha comes charging down wanting a single.

She is turned back and dives in just in time as the throw comes in. It was off target anyway but that would have been a real bonus for England.

A fascinating morning session, far more T20 than Test match at times. That ball that ripped from Ecclestone right at the end tells me we’re going to see more turn than a bicycle wheel as this goes forward. We shall see.

Good start to the afternoon session for the home side as Jemimah Rodrigues drives the first ball gloriously through the covers for four.

Lauren Filer comes back well, though, and tests Satheesh Shubha with a bouncer. Easily ducked by the left-hander.

Excellent morning session of Test cricket. England a little loose with the ball (don’t think they’ve bowled badly) but Shubha and Rodrigues have played beautifully. Super track for batting. Think England need to get some maidens bowled and dry up the scoring rate.

Elsewhere, Marnus Labuschagne is out in Perth but David Warner is closing in on a century on day one of the first Test against Pakistan.

When India's openers were dismissed - particularly Smriti Mandhana - I was a bit concerned that they would fall in a heap. Their batting is full of promise, but hasn't quite nailed down consistency.

But that partnership between Satheesh Shubha and Jemimah Rodrigues has not only steadied the nerves, but put India in control.

Both look completely at home in Test cricket. It may not be that surprising for Rodrigues, who has played more than 100 white-ball games for India, but it is mightily impressive from Satheesh on her first international outing.

They've withstood the pressure but played beautifully with it, especially off the front foot. I suspect Heather Knight will be turning to another short, fiery burst from Lauren Filer straight after lunch to try and test both out against the short stuff.

After that close shave, Shubha Satheesh tucks her bat under her arm and wanders off.

Kate Cross and Lauren Bell struck with the new ball and with the score 47-2 England were well on top.

But this partnership of 89 between Satheesh and Jemimah Rodrigues means it has to go down as India's session.

Almost on the stroke of lunch! Shubha Satheesh has been immaculate this morning but edges Sophie Ecclestone final delivery - the final delivery of the session.

The ball goes quickly, however - really quickly. Heather Knight is at slip and she can only get a glancing hand on the ball.
