The prospects are not good for Brighton's attempt to claw back their way into the Championship play-off final.

No second-tier side has ever lost the home leg of a play-off and gone on to reach the final. Added to which Derby, who finished 13 points ahead of the Seagulls in the table, have won all three of the teams' meeting so far this season.

The Rams have started well with Andre Wisdom thudding a shot into the midriff of Tomasz Kuszczak from 20 yards out or so...

Oasis's Noel Gallagher: "This shows we're not a flash in a pan, like Blackburn that season and Leeds in the old Division One. Samir Nasri's goal was great, this was great and we ran the clock down. And I've got Vincent Kompany's captain's armband - I saw him in the tunnel and blagged it off him!"

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "It's been an incredible journey this year, so to finish with 12 wins out of 14 is an incredible achievement by the players.

"We are a young team - it's been a wonderful campaign.

We've made the supporters dream and that is our job to do that.

"We'll add to the group and we'll be ready to fight again next season, but now we've got the belief."

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew: "We did not lose the plot. We were comfortable, and you cannot argue the referee's played a part today. He should have given two free-kicks in the build-up to both their goals. We argued the case and Shola Ameobi, I know, doesn't swear. He should have handled it better, Phil Dowd. I've been in to see him. Shola tells me he asked him sarcastically if he was going to send him off, then he did! He surely could have handled that better.

"The second half of this season hasn't been good enough, and we need to accept that and make sure it doesn't happen again. But we were great in the first half, chasing European places. Our fans are frustrated, I apologise to them, and hopefully we'll put it right and come back after the summer."

Manchester United interim manager Ryan Giggs: "It's been an experience with ups and downs. I've enjoyed it and I didn't want the second half to end. The fans were great and the players were great and I loved it.

"I will decide within the next week (what I do), the managerial situation will be sorted in the next week and I need to have a think about what I will do."

Though there is obviously some disappointment - we thought we were good enough to win the title. But we'll come back stronger next season.

"There has been a lot of tension here in the last fortnight, with a young squad going for the title. But it wasn't to be this season, though we're still very proud."

Norwich interim manager Neil Adams: "I am not passing the buck but it is a 38-game season and you need to pick up as many points as you can across the season. The biggest problem has been scoring goals, it has not been good enough this season.

"The club is in good health going forward, they have cleared the debt and now the focus has to be on getting back in the Premier League.

"I don't know about my own future, I have got no indication of which way it is going to go. I will find out with everyone else."

"It's plain to see what we need. If you don't get investment, then it is always hard. It's a massive club and the lads are hurting with the criticism but, as I said to the lads, they should be proud for staying up because it's a hell of an achievement."
