Signs of hope for the red half of Manchester then, but what about the blue half? Well, Manchester City are in action tomorrow evening knowing victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium will put them within touching distance of the Premier League title. Sunderland and West Brom can also ensure survival when they meet at the Stadium of Light. Don't miss it - if it's anything like Monday night's action, it'll be a cracker. Until tomorrow evening...goodnight!

Manchester United interim boss Ryan Giggs: "I said when I took over I wanted to bring excitement back. Some of the forward play from the three young lads was brilliant.

"We got the young lads in to train with us and they never looked out of place. I wanted to freshen things up from Saturday and they never let us down. James Wilson is not just a finisher, his all-round play is very good and he is exciting.

"My concentration has not changed, I will do my job on and off the pitch and we will see what happens after Sunday. The fans have kept supporting us and they will carry on supporting us.

"Nemanja Vidic has been a brilliant player for us, a brilliant defender. He shared so much success with the lads, he goes with our good wishes and hopefully he does well.

"Phil Jones has gone to hospital. Hopefully he will be okay."

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic: "It was hard in many ways, because it was my last game at Old Trafford, we did not have a great year as it was my first year not celebrating a trophy. It was a tough season.

"This is maybe the best part of my life. I have three kids, won lots of trophies and have been loved by fans. The fans showed their class when we didn't do well this season.

"I was very emotional. I have to say my heart will always be at this club. I have spent so many years here and been part of such a good time and worked with so many great people.

"It is the board to decide but Ryan has a real talent to be the manager and a good manager. If he is not successful this time then in the future he should be considered to be manager of this club."

  4. Player reactionpublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 6 May 2014

Hull striker Matty Fryatt: "I was pleased with the goal. We gave it a good go in the second half.

"It has been a disappointing season for Manchester United but for a team like ourselves it is always a difficult place to come."

Daily Telegraph football correspondent Henry Winter: "Ryan Giggs was cryptic in his programme note as well as his speech. You have to look at his body language as well. Everyone here thought it was his farewell.

"I just think when you heard the Stretford End beseeching him to score, it did have a testimonial feel and that's the biggest message from tonight, that Giggs is off."

A few people have been asking who the last Premier League manager to select himself was. We think it was Stuart McCall for Bradford against Everton in November 2000.

An interesting stat to come out of tonight's game is that Manchester United's passing accuracy was 91.6%. Only once this season have they recorded a better figure in the league (92% v Fulham in February).

Matthew Harmonyx:, external As much as Giggs and Man U fans try to portray this season as a blip, it could be a long time before the 'good times' return.

Cameron Laws:, external Take a bow, Giggsy. One of the finest to ever play the game. Don't think we'll ever see a story like that again.

Dilan:, external Vidic has been one of the best defenders to have ever played for United and I'm really going to miss him.

Hull City manager Steve Bruce: "In the second half we decided to have a go at it and in the first half we were very comfortable. For me it is a foul for the second goal. A lot of players have staked a claim to play in the FA Cup final. Matty Fryatt has been terrific. He changed the semi-final and every time I have asked him to come on he has done well. He looks favourite to take that position.

"If it has ended for Ryan Giggs it has been some career. There will never be anyone as decorated. Sometimes the word great is used too often but he has been one of the greats.

"It can't be dark times when you have someone like Adnan Januzaj, he is only 18 and he looks a proper, proper player. In Januzaj they have the outstanding young player in Europe."

"I think Ryan Giggs will get opportunities and offers because of how he's conducted himself in the role and I think he might go out and have a go on his own somewhere, somewhere in the Championship maybe.

"I think he'd learn more by doing that and coming back in three or four years if the opportunity arose. I believe he's better off doing it that way rather than taking a coaching role under Van Gaal."

  12. Louis van Gaalpublished at 21:59 British Summer Time 6 May 2014

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former Ajax and Netherlands player Ronald de Boer, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live about Louis van Gaal: "He's a very passionate man who loves coaching players. Also he's a very honest coach and what is very important is that he has a vision for the team which he won't swerve around. Tactically he's very good. He has everything a coach or a manager needs.

"In the beginning you have to adapt a little bit to how he's working but then you'll understand how he's working. Every player, if you ask him which coach impressed him the most, they say Van Gaal.

"His trademark is he always brings through hungry young players. He's very interested in the whole academy. Most managers only focus on the first team but Louis Van Gaal knows the names of the U12s, U13s and U14s."

Over on BBC Radio 5 live now, they are playing an interview with Ronald de Boer in which he says Louis van Gaal and Ryan Giggs would 'fit perfectly' together at Old Trafford.

Having played under Van Gaal at Ajax and Barcelona, de Boer says that his former manager has all the skills to be a successful manager of Manchester United. He also hopes the Dutchman would keep Giggs as part of his staff as de Boer believes Van Gaal would be a great mentor to the Welshman.

Those three points mean Manchester United can still finish sixth if results go their way on the final day of the season. They would need to beat Southampton away from home and hope Tottenham lose to Aston Villa at White Hart Lane for that to happen.

"Ryan Giggs never said this would be his farewell game and never mentioned anything about the possibility of working with the new manager, so he is keeping his cards close to his chest. A lot of us were anticipating it was maybe his last appearance but he didn't give a lot away did he?

"This season's not been good enough for Manchester United to finish behind the likes of Everton and Tottenham, who are great clubs but haven't been challenging for titles.

"It's not been a great season and there's an awful lot of work to do. James Wilson looks a fantastic prospect and that bodes well for the future.

"You can't paper over the cracks, an injection of players and leaders is needed. The club needs direction under a vastly experienced manager and they're right on the path to appointing a new man."

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic, saying goodbye to the Old Trafford crowd: "I had so many great time here. It is hard to speak because of the emotions. A special thanks to Nemanja [Vidic] who is leaving us this year. He goes with all our best wishes for success in the coming years.

"We know it's been tough this season and over the years we've been spoilt with the success we've had but you've always supported the team and the staff and I'm sure in the coming years we'll bring you more success.

"I'd just like to say keep supporting us, you've seen a little glimpse of the future, we always play attractive football - keep supporting us and the good times will come back soon."
