Manchester United assistant manager Nicky Butt: "We've brought in four lads who have been with the club from a very early age and have come right through the ranks, that is very important for this club. The coaching staff had a chat about it and we thought it was important to bring the young lads in at this point.

"They will bring us speed, energy and they will enjoy it and give their all, that has been a big part in picking the squad."

Hull manager Steve Bruce: "It's an ideal time to freshen the squad up, with many players who have played a lot of games given a rest. It's an important time for us ahead of the FA Cup final so we find ourselves in a position where we can make the changes. I never thought I'd be able to do that at the start of the season."

Ian Ladyman, northern football correspondent of the Daily Mail, on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It probably goes against the grain of what is popular but I don't think it is that important who comes in to assist Louis van Gaal. I would love to see Ryan Giggs stay but history shows it doesn't mater. What you need is good coaches and a good manager, it doesn't matter where are they from. United are desperate to find a role but Giggs is determined for that to be that right role. He is not going to just stay and wash the dishes."

Andy in Armagh on text: Ryan Giggs has been an incredible servant to Manchester United Football Club. His 971 appearances spanning 24 years while winning 34 major trophies will never be matched. His like will never be seen in football again. A true great.

Former Netherlands international Ronald de Boer talking about Louis van Gaal on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Ryan Giggs knows the players and it is very important he can learn from Louis van Gaal. He will be a great teacher for him, he can learn the job and then take over.

"Van Gaal is a man who wants to help people. He is a very honest manager. What is important for Ryan is he is fully 100% and is really motivated. Then I think they will connect perfectly."

Ryan Giggs has also used his programme notes to suggest Manchester United have the basis of a squad which can return the club to the top of the Premier League.

"I don't buy into the theory that this club needs to bring in lots of new players and sell off a lot of the current squad," writes Giggs.

"Whoever gets the job will be taking over at a wonderful club. I have hugely enjoyed my time as interim manager, Saturday's game apart, and it has been an honour and privilege to occupy the role. I have seen enough from this position to convince me that the next manager will be inheriting a squad capable of winning honours."

"Nemanja Vidic is the best defender Ryan Giggs says he has ever seen and played with at Manchester United. That is some praise. It would be fitting if he did come and on and make a farewell appearance."

One man definitely saying his goodbyes to Old Trafford tonight is Nemanja Vidic after eight-and-a-half years at the club. In that time he's won five Premier League titles, one Champions League and three League Cups, meaning he's firmly etched into Manchester United folklore.

"When you see a player like Nemanja Vidic is leaving this club you feel really sad," United left-back Patrice Evra said. "I call him the rock. I am lucky to have played alongside him, for me he was a great centre-back."

Can he be regarded as great? I don't think he was far off at his peak...

BBC sports news correspondent Richard Conway on Radio 5 live

"It is a question of when and not if Manchester United will name Louis van Gaal as manager. In the next few days we will see how the club are going to play this. The club want to get the final league game out of the way before taking this story on. In the next coming days, certainly before the weekend, we will get so a strong indication, if not confirmation. There are no other candidates now."

Ryan Giggs's former Manchester United team-mate Steve Bruce also believes the club will find a role for the ex-Wales international when he does decide to hang up his boots.

"If it is Louis van Gaal he'll have his own opinions but there's always going to be a place for Ryan," said Bruce. "I'm sure they'll find a space for him somewhere. He will be treated properly, I'm convinced of that. I don't think he'll leave."

Bruce then joked: "He can come and see out his days at the KC Stadium, playing in the Europa League. If he's available on a free, I'd take him."

In his programme notes for tonight's match, Ryan Giggs says he hasn't come to a final decision on whether to continue playing next season.

"When this season has finished," Giggs wrote, "I will have to seriously consider what I'm going to do in terms of my own career. There have been times this season when I have felt that it wouldn't be right to play on next year, but then after other games - like the win over Olympiakos - I have had the urge to keep going. I have honestly not made my mind up either way."
