"If you thought Rickie Lambert's strike was sweet, this was one two times as good, if not three. England give him too much time and they pay the price, What a strike.

"You have to say James Milner and Jack Wilshere both stood off and almost invited him to shoot."

  3. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:27 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

BBC Wales Sport's Bruce Pope: "Netherlands know they will likely need to convert more of their chances if they are to topple holders Spain in nine days' time at the World Cup, although they can be satisfied with a good if unspectacular night's work in Amsterdam.

"While beaten, Wales boss Chris Coleman can be encouraged by the performance and debuts from the likes of George Williams and James Chester that suggest there is a growing depth to his squad."

Now it is 2-2. England make the fatal mistake of letting Michael Arroyo have time to shift the ball on to his favoured right foot just outside the box - then bang. Ben Foster is picking the ball out of his net before the England keeper barely has time to blink. Sensational strike.

"It should be 2-2. Again England are the cause of their own downfall, giving the ball away needlessly."

  6. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

A glorious opportunity goes begging for an Ecuador equaliser. England are caught flat-footed as Enner Valencia looks set to pounce for a second time. But the livewire forward takes an age before seeing his scuffed blocked by Phil Jones' last-gasp challenge.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 21:24 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

And that's the end of Oxlade-Chamberlain's afternoon as physio Gary Lewin gives a worrying signal to the bench. The Arsenal man trudges off to be replaced by Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan, who will be the proud owner of a first England cap tonight.

Opening goalscorer Wayne Rooney also gets first dibs on the showers as he is replaced by Raheem Sterling.

Oh, hello - can't beat a bit of handbags to liven up a match. Man-of-the-moment Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain loses possession, only to stick a toe in to dispossess his Ecuadorian opponent Carlos Gruezo. But Gruezo reacts angrily by kicking out at Oxlade-Chamberlain, who tumbles to the ground.

Not sure what fluids Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain knocked back at the break (see 20:52) - but I wouldn't mind swigging some. The England midfielder bursts forwards again with another incisive run, but has little support and the back-pedalling Ecuadorians survive.

Stats provider OptaJoe on Twitter:, external 5 - Rickie Lambert has had a hand in five goals in his five England appearances (three goals, two assists). Beetroot.

  11. CLOSE!published at 21:14 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is flying through the gears now. The Arsenal midfielder picks up the ball inside his own half, before driving forward at pace into the Ecuador half. He picks out goalscorer Rickie Lambert, whose first-time effort whistles past the far post. Much better from England.

The Dutch double their lead. Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben runs down the right and plays a square ball to Netherlands substitute Jeremain Lens, who sidefoots in.

"What a magnificent strike. Ross Barkley did all the running, there was only him and Lambert in Ecuador's half. Unstoppable, fantastic strike from Rickie Lambert.

"Textbook technique, with the outside of his foot."

  15. GOALpublished at 21:09 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Two Liverpudlians combine to put England ahead. Magical stuff from young Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, who weaves through the Ecuador defence before unselfishly laying off to Rickie Lambert. The angle is tight for the new Liverpool striker - but he doesn't care. Lambert simply smashes into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot.

  16. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 21:08 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Another change of personnel for Ecuador. Coach Reinaldo Rueda takes no chances with Dynamo Moscow midfielder Cristian Noboa, who limps off to be replaced by Edison Mendez.

  17. Postpublished at 21:06 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

"Engerland, Engerland, En-ger-land!" The thousands of hardy souls who have crossed the Atlantic find their voice as England win a corner. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain loses possession from a short corner, briefly threatens the Ecuador goal after winning back possession, before Ecuador break again on the counter. But Antonio Valencia's right-wing cross is scrambled clear.

  18. KICK-OFFpublished at 21:02 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

One change for Ecuador as ex-Manchester City striker Felipe Caicedo is replaced by Cruz Azul forward Jaoa Rojas at the break. As you were for England.

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen:

"I think this is a missed opportunity for England not playing their strongest side. A lot of other countries are playing their full strength sides tonight. You can't win the World Cup in your opening match but you can lose it. This could have been a chance to get them gelling together.

"The positive has been Wayne Rooney. He scored and looked bright."
