  1. The boss speaks...published at 19:53 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

England manager Roy Hodgson talking to ITV: "We think the best way to get Wayne Rooney match fit is to play games. He will start on the left, I would like to see him there because it is a role we might have use for him in.

"Everything influences my thinking for Brazil. I have said all along I have great faith in this team. I think they are mature enough to show how good they are.

"We haven't got the glaring sunshine but it is quite humid."

    Tim Vickery
BBC Sport's South American football expert

"Ecuador are putting out the side that will probably start the World Cup against Switzerland. They don't have any quality centre backs at all and they have problems in central midfield, where they have suffered a number of problems.

"Where Ecuador will have some joy is down the flanks, they are quick, skilful and powerful. The death of Christian Benitez is a huge problem emotionally for them. Tactically it has been very hard to replace him as well."

  4. Boots back on for Becks?published at 19:47 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

With Frank Lampard considering a move to the MLS, one Englishman already very familiar with the United States - no, not Piers Morgan - is David Beckham. The 39-year-old former England captain enjoyed his five-year stint at LA Galaxy so much that he is now setting up his own Major League Soccer team - in Miami.

And Sir Becks, who retired in May 2013, has hinted he might dig his boots out of the cupboard to play again for the team. Appearing on a BBC One documentary, Beckham says: "There's never been a player-owner but maybe?"

David Beckham: Into the Unknown will be shown on Monday, 9 June at 20:30 BST.

Chris from Nottingham on text: Lots of people are confusing Man United having a poor season with Rooney having a poor season. He was one of the few good performers last season. Why aren't people questioning Lambert's place in the team? He was in a team that finished below Man United last season.

Ben from Brighton: Sturridge is a better striker than Rooney. Sterling and Lallana are better on the flanks than Rooney. That leaves only the number 10 role open for him. But he hasn't always convinced in that position for me, he drifts too deep. The debate is definitely there to be had.

Callum: All those saying Rooney has been average/should be left out are utterly barmy. He's a must start for England. And this coming from a Scotland fan.

More importantly, we want to know what threat the Ecuadorians pose on the football pitch - not the dancefloor. Here's the lowdown on a side which has been drawn in Group E, alongside France, Switzerland and Honduras, in Brazil...

Who to watch out for? Antonio Valencia. Who else? The Manchester United winger is the national team's captain and comfortably most-well known player. Fellow winger Christian Noboa, who plays his football for Dynamo Moscow, is another who could be key.

How good are they? Not too bad actually. They are ranked 28th in the world, just behind Sweden, and are also preparing for Brazil having qualified for the World Cup. They were unbeaten at home in qualifying, and also secured a credible draw with Argentina. Little over 12 months ago they also reached a record high of 10th in the world rankings.

So what do we know about tonight's opponents Ecuador?

For those of you whose teenage years were in the 1990s, then the word Ecuador will likely stir memories of the 1997 dance classic by Sash. Who knew shouting Ecuador several times over would make for an international best seller?

  10. World Cup shootoutspublished at 19:36 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Steven Gerrard has, unfortunately for England fans, experienced the pain of missing a penalty in a World Cup shootout. The Liverpool skipper stuck his effort in the 2006 quarter-final against Portugal to goalkeeper Ricardo's left.

But it wasn't far enough in the corner and at a nice height for the Portuguese stopper - and that equalled trouble. England went on to lose 3-1 on penalties, with Frank Lampard and Jamie Carragher also missing.

Think you could do better than those three Premier League stars? See where you would put your penalty in our glitzy interactive guide to shootouts. Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, who kept his cool to convert in the 1990 semi-final against West Germany, talks you through what it is like to be stood staring into an opposing goalkeeper's eyes.

Gabriel Burne:, external All of you leaving Henderson out of your England XI's are making a big mistake. Will be crucial against Italy.

  12. KICK-OFFpublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

As usual, the Dutch fans inside a packed Amsterdam Arena are all decked out in orange (or should that be oranje?) as Louis van Gaal's side aim to wave farewell with a win against an inexperienced Wales side. Netherlands skipper Robin van Persie is all smiles before the Welsh lads kick off the action. Can they wipe that smirk off his face?

  14. Penalty practice for Englandpublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

England captain Steven Gerrard, who is sitting out tonight's match, says the squad have been practising penalties "a lot" ahead of the World Cup. However, he insists they are not obsessed with spot-kicks.

Perhaps they should be though. Because England have the worst penalty shootout record in World Cup history, with three defeats out of three.

"I understand the fixation because we've failed in a few," says the Liverpool midfielder. "But don't get carried away with it because it might never come about."

"Wayne Rooney is the man in the spotlight playing a left-flank role he does not always enjoy. Lots of debate around his place in the team but would England really be a better team without Wayne Rooney? And a start for Liverpool's Rickie Lambert - how the boyhood Reds' fan will love people saying that."

"You don't pick players purely on form but the last six months I have been surprised how the press have stuck by Wayne Rooney. I think he has been quite average.

"I don't know if the spark is there. You don't get excuses at World Cups. You either do it or someone else gets the opportunity to do it."
