"Frank Lampard is trying to take the game on himself. There have been too many short passes, the ball comes to Frank 20 yards out and he decides to have a strike on goal."

England knocking heavily on the Ecuadorian door now. Stand-in skipper Frank Lampard is a man who knows how to strike a ball from distance and the Chelsea veteran lashes one from distance. Ecuador keeper Maximo Banguera is equal to the effort though, acrobatically tipping over his crossbar. Touch of the Hollywoods there...

England's defence may be looking a tad shaky in these early stages, but their attacking players have shown glimpses of promise. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain does superbly to keep the ball alive when he wriggles past two players on the byeline and cuts it back for Ross Barkley in the middle of the area, but an Ecuador defender swiftly stabs the ball out for a corner.

BBC Sport Wales' Bruce Pope: "Wales have given a good account of themselves at the Amsterdam Arena but can perhaps count themselves lucky only to be one goal down. Arjen Robben might have had a hat-trick by now, while Robin van Persie has also wasted a couple of chances he might have expected to find the back of the net with."

  7. CLOSE!published at 20:19 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

England responded well going forward - not so much at the back. After conceding that early goal, Roy Hodgson's defensive crew look rattled. Someone opens the gate for goalkeeper Ben Foster to unconvincingly hare out, cue a few moments of panic, before Carlos Gruezo drills low into the hands of the relieved England stopper. Big escape.

"Ecuador's fans are getting very excited - fair to say England's defensive units looks, to put it politely, makeshift."

  9. Postpublished at 20:16 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

How can England respond? Very well actually. Inventive build-up play, started by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and via Ross Barkley's cheeky backheel, finds Wayne Rooney. His outside-of-the-boot cross scuttles down the corridor of uncertainty between Ecuador goalkeeper Maximo Banguera and his defence - but rolls to safety.

"Not a great moment for England's defence. Chris Smalling caught under the ball and Luke Shaw beaten by Enner Valencia for the header."

"An absolutely brilliant ball in, their first real attack. A delightful ball, England didn't react and a towering header. Foster had absolutely no chance.

"There were a number of times against Peru where England looked sloppy in defence. This happens against Italy and you think it would be very difficult to get back into the game."

  13. GOALpublished at 20:08 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Oh dear. England set off like an InterCity 125 train leaving King's Cross station - but they have quickly been slowed down. Ecuador winger Walter Ayovi swings in a delicious cross from the left, allowing Enner Valencia - no relation to team-mate Antonio - to rise between Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling and plant in a bullet header.

Wales have acquitted themselves well in the opening half hour - without creating any chances - but now they have been undone by Arjen Robben. Dutch skipper Robin van Persie blasts a left-wing cross against the knees of Wales keeper Wayne Hennessey, with Robben pouncing on the rebound.

  15. Postpublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Very bright start from England. Ross Barkley tries to feed Jack Wilshere as the Ecuadorians scramble clear for another corner. Ecuador keeper Maximo Banguera fists the delivery away from his net with a firm punch.

  16. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

England kick off proceedings as Wayne Rooney storms into the Ecuador box within seconds. But the Manchester United player's effort is blocked and England win a corner. Looks like he has a point to prove...

"I'm not sure they belted it out but at least they were all moving the mouths. It should be one of the proudest moments of being an international footballer when the anthems are sung."

  18. Postpublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

England boss Roy Hodgson demanded that his players all sing the 'God Save The Queen' so I'm expecting some lung-bursting efforts as the first bar is chimed out. Chris Smalling mumbles one verse, Wayne Rooney hardly moves his lips as all, while Luke Shaw has a decent stab. Disappointing.

A healthy mix of yellow Ecuadorian and white English shirts dotted around a half-empty Sun Life Stadium as the sides stroll out. Two Ecuador players - one of whom is ex-Manchester City striker Felipe Caicedo, I believe - are cradling tiny babies in their arms as their national anthem booms out of the PA system. Remarkable scenes.

The Dutch have had the best two chances of the match, with Manchester United striker Robin van Persie forcing a low save from Wayne Hennessey, while Arjen Robben dragged a shot wide when he only had the Wales keeper to beat. But in the last five minutes, the home side have put Louis van Gaal's World Cup-bound men under pressure.
