When he is not sipping a cheeky glass of red in a Clitheroe wine bar, former Manchester United boss David Moyes is fond of a trip to Miami. Which goes some way to explaining his presence in the Sun Life Stadium. The Scot looks quite pleased with England's first-half performance...

  2. Gibraltar rockingpublished at 20:59 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

It is a historic evening for Gibraltar as they record their first win since becoming a Uefa member last year.

They had already recorded credible draws against the likes of Estonia and Slovakia in previous outings, but Kyle Casciaro's second-half goal was enough to give them a 1-0 victory against fellow Mediterranean minnows Malta.

They will be dancing on the streets of Gibraltar tonight.

Alan on text: These matches don't matter. It's all about team bonding and not getting injured. Nothing more.

Chris: Another anonymous performance from Rooney. OK so he scored but Barkley has been more lively than Rooney was at Wembley and he has been comprehensively outdone by Ox on the other side.

Graham from London: Does Barkley know he has to stay awake all the time and that he is part of a team? The laziest and most selfish player I have seen in a long while.

England's dodgy defensive display in Miami is crying out for a Terry Butcher-style centre-half to knock a few heads together. Which leads us nicely into a plug for our World Cup Rewind series.

Earlier, the 1986 World Cup quarter-final between England and Argentina - with Butcher in Bobby Robson's side - was the focus of our attention and in case you missed that dose of nostalgia then fear not because the text commentary, plus video highlights, are available online right now.

If you want more 'as live' commentary on iconic matches of the past then the good news is there is more to come, with the 1990 World Cup semi-final between England and West Germany being covered on Saturday at 15:00 BST. Full details on which games feature in World Cup Rewind can be found here.

On our way to a six-a-side match, you or I will nip into our local petrol station for a bar of chocolate and pack of chewing gum.

Thankfully, our nation's footballing talent take a more scientific approach. Roy Hodgson's attention to detail cannot be faulted, with every player's intake of drink supplements tailored to each individual's needs.

"We are using sweat analysis and different types of hydration - but I judge people on their footballing ability," said Hodgson before the match. "I would never totally ignore what I see on the training field to go down the scientific route."

Hodgson's men will be throwing some of those fluids down their necks as we speak.

"We don't have anyone running behind the Ecuadorian defenders. Lambert wants the ball to feet, Rooney wants the ball to feet. We aren't able to get behind to cause them problems.

"I think Wayne Rooney is showing a bit of frustration. He wants to create something. There have been too many passes for passing sake. You have to look to probe forward, there has not been enough effort to break the lines of Ecuador.

"Rooney has justified his start though, he has worked hard and got his goal."

"A first-half performance that was almost to be expected from such an experimental side but England's central defensive partnership of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling hardly resemble club colleagues and James Milner has had a tough time in his unfamiliar right-back role.

"Big plus has been the goal for Wayne Rooney - and he has had other opportunities."

  9. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:46 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

The referee can't wait to leg it to his changing room for a half-time orange - he doesn't play one second of injury-time before tooting his whistle for the break.

  10. Postpublished at 20:45 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Lively ebb and flow to this game as both teams swap attacks. It is like a training-pitch game of attack and defend at the moment. Chris Smalling comes to the rescue by blocking a dangerous Ecuador effort, before Wayne Rooney warms the palms of keeper Maximo Banguera twice in the matter of seconds.

Ian from Manchester on text: Milner as a right back isn't working. Ecuador are getting passed him far too easily. Hodgson must see it surely?

Andy: We need to see more intensity from England when they don't have the ball. Rooney, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Barkley and Wilshere need to press from the front. All the best teams of modern times do it (Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Spain). We need to see more work-rate from England here.

Paul in Ormskirk: Never understood the cryptic management of England, line-ups changing for every friendly. Just say 'this is my top XI, and they'll be very well practiced as a unit in game conditions'? Subs are there if starters need to be rested.

  12. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:41 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

There has been a big performance over in Amsterdam - but it is nothing to do with the Netherlands or Wales players. No, Eurodance heroes 2Unlimited strutted their stuff during the break at the Amsterdam Arena, reviving memories of school discos and double denim. Could there be No Limit for Louis van Gaal's men in the second half? I'll get my coat...

After surviving that scare, England almost take the lead. Young left-back Luke Shaw bursts forward but Wayne Rooney cannot connect cleanly with his cutback.

  14. Postpublished at 20:36 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Ben Foster must have drank too much caffeine before kick-off - the England keeper has another rush of blood to the head as he charges out to meet a long Ecuador ball forward. He completely misses the ball with a wild swipe but Enner Valencia's prod goalwards is not convincing. To be fair to Foster, he wasn't helped by Ross Barkley losing possession or Chris Smalling playing Valencia onside.

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Miami

"The very definition of a scrambled goal but Wayne Rooney will not care - just the sort of break he needed. It leaves Rooney on 39 England goals, just one behind Michael Owen and it is worth asking again: would England really be a better side without him?"

  16. Postpublished at 20:32 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

    Danny Mills
    BBC Radio 5 live

"The goalkeeper flapped at it, it hit Lambert, the keeper made a hash of it and it was simple for Wayne Rooney. That will do Rooney the world of good. The goalkeeper was awful. He flapped at it completely."

  17. GOALpublished at 20:28 British Summer Time 4 June 2014

Who says Wayne Rooney should not start for England? If you need someone to scramble in the scrappiest of equalisers, via a suspicious-looking handball from Rickie Lambert and a rebound off the post, then Rooney is your man. Not the prettiest of goals would be a generous statement to that horror show of an equaliser. Not that Roy Hodgson cares.
