There's a first. Lightning has forced the players off and I've just been told by a regular here that the lightning must stop within an eight-mile radius of the stadium for 30 minutes before we can resume.

Moments before the players were led off, Daniel Sturridge went close with a shot on the turn after a powerful run by Wayne Rooney and a clever step-over by Danny Welbeck. England are on top and Roy Hodgson will be pleased with what he has seen. The only thing lacking from their play is a goal.

This is a dangerous situation and the referee has dealt with it quickly. He has to have the safety of the players in mind. The temperature has dropped dramatically quite quickly. The moment there is a flash of lightning, the clap of thunder immediately follows.

Drama at the Sun Life Stadium as play is suspended in the 23rd minute. It is thundering and lightning, and United States referee Ricardo Salazar is not taking any risks. He leads both teams off the pitch. Roy Hodgson is not arguing with the decision as he gives a nod of approval. The word is play will be suspended for half an hour.

It's thundering and lightning in the sunshine state. But England, with Steven Gerrard the driving force, are continuing with their positive start although their finishing leaves a lot to be desired. Adam Lallana blazes another attempt over the bar. Penny for the thoughts of David Beckham, who is sat in the crowd.

Firas, external: I'm sorry but there is no way Glen Johnson should start. Looks so unsteady when defending- I would try Phil Jones there.

Chris Mitchell, external: Five professional divisions - Glen Johnson really can't be the best right back available.

David Nicholas, external: Who would've thought Kyle Walker would actually be a better option. Glen Johnson is poor.

Steven Gerrard, with his left foot, balloons the ball over the bar - and almost out of the stadium - with an attempt from outside the area. Then Wayne Rooney's 25-yard free-kick is spilled by the nervous Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares. Positive signs for Roy Hodgson as the England boss takes another gulp of water in the dugout.

Screams from the crowd each time a blue shirt touches the ball. England's defence is tested for the first time from a corner, Gary Cahill's attempted headed clearance falling for Víctor Bernardez whose wild shot is high and wide.

It has been a good, positive, bright start for England with a good tempo. The passing has been crisp and sharp.

Danny Welbeck is on a mission to secure a place in the side against Italy and the Manchester United man is determined to make the most of this game. Welbeck tests the Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares from just outside the area with a shot that is beaten away.

I would like to see England play with a decent tempo and moving the ball around. I don't want to see them chasing around. I want to see a bit of sharpness and for the front three to try things. When we are defending, I want to see them set up properly.

Lots of early possession for England, who are patiently building from the back. Plenty of early touches for Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson. Neither side in a rush which is understandable considering the temperature.

We're up and running. England are wearing red shirts and white shorts, Honduras are in blue. The pitch looks immaculate.

Andrew in Leeds: I really think the England boys should get into it a bit more, like the rugby team against the All Blacks this morning. Arms locked, belting out the anthem. Get the adrenalin going!

Fireworks greet the teams as they walk out and the national anthems are under way. There's a decent crowd inside the Sun Life Stadium. That Honduras anthem has woken everyone up. And I mean everyone.

Roy Hodgson was still in shorts at primary school and Wolverhampton Wanderers were champions of England the last time the national team headed to a World Cup on the back of a defeat. That was way back in 1954, Hungary hammering a side containing the likes of Sir Tom Finney and Billy Wright 7-1 in Budapest.

Since then the Three Lions have signed off with seven wins out of a possible 11 before the tournament. In 2010, two own goals gave England an unconvincing 2-1 win over Japan in Austria in their final warm-up game before flying to South Africa. That match included substitute appearances by Joe Cole and Emile Heskey.

Will it be a happy send-off against Honduras? Standby. We're about to find out...

England coach Roy Hodgson on selection ahead of Italy: "You can assume what you like I suppose, but there are still a lot of training sessions and thinking to be done and there are a lot of players not starting today who will be in contention.

"Raheem Sterling would have started but unfortunately because he was sent off I can't use him. We are always thinking about Italy and what we have to do. I don't think the shape of the team today will vary greatly from the Ecuador game.

"I am interested in game management. Controlling the game and deciding the tempo of the game is best in these conditions."
