Roy has [given the game away]. There is no alternative really, we are assuming there are no further injuries but this is pretty much the line-up against Italy. The one factor I want to throw in is 'what we do about Andrea Pirlo?' He is their pivotal player. Do you put someone on him?

Roy will pretty much know his side to take on Italy, probably 10 of the 11 to start. The only dilemma that he may have is the right-side midfield position. Does he go with Raheem Sterling or Danny Welbeck?

  5. Who makes your greatest World Cup XI?published at 21:30 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

What's your first World Cup memory? Mine is Argentina 1978, when snowstorms of shredded blue and white paper filled stadiums from Buenos Aires to Rosario, when Archie Gemmill conjured up a magical goal after dancing around three Netherlands defenders to seal a memorable Scotland win.

Sadly, Gemmill does not feature in BBC Sport's list of 110 of the greatest players in the history of the Fifa World Cup. But Mario Kempes, leading scorer at the tournament and who inspired a generation of children to play with rolled down socks, does and makes my all-time World Cup XI.

  6. From Huyton to England World Cup captainpublished at 21:28 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

"I remember the first time I saw him," says Dave Shannon, former Liverpool youth team coach, who invited a precocious eight-year-old down to the Vernon Sangster sports centre on Priory Road one winter's evening in 1988 after a tip-off from Whiston Juniors manager Ben McIntyre.

"He was smaller than most of the other lads. But the thing that stood out, along with his technical ability, was his desire. He was fearless. He ran everywhere. We were working with the likes of Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher, Rickie Lambert and Jason Koumas. Now Jason was a good player, but he was lazy. He didn't have the desire of Steven."

David Nicholas, external: Good to see Adam Lallana starting. Would prefer to see Rickie Lambert over Wayne Rooney.

Matt Rodway, external: Danny Welbeck picked again, clearly a Roy favourite, needs a big game or there's plenty of quality ready to replace him.

Andy Lanigan, external: Ross Barkley for Jordan Henderson would be my only change.

Now here's a pose you don't often see from Roy Hodgson. The England manager is pictured disembarking after a boat trip during a fact-finding visit to Manaus in February. Fortunately the 66-year-old made it on to dry land without incident, but will his players sink or swim in the middle of the Amazon rainforest next Saturday?

  9. Honduras team newspublished at 21:22 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

England will recognise some familiar faces among the opposition side, with four British-based players starting for Honduras.

Hull defender Maynor Figueroa, Stoke midfielder Wilson Palacios, Wigan midfielder Roger Espinoza and Celtic's Emilio Izaguirre are selected, while another Wigan player, Juan Carlos Garcia, begins on the bench.

Honduras starting XI: Valladares, Beckeles, Bernardez, Figueroa, Izaguirre, Chavez, Palacios, Espinoza, Bengtson, Costly, Garrido.

  10. Hit or Costly miss?published at 21:19 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Think of great footballers' names and thoughts drift towards Zenit St Petersburg's Hulk, former Swindon and Kilmarnock player Danny Invincibile, ex- Hungary midfielder Zoltan Kiss and former Brazil striker Vagner Love.

But Honduras forward Carlo Costly is right up there when it comes to a headline writer's dream.

Unfortunately, Birmingham City fans remember the 31-year-old for his costly misses after failing to find the net in eight appearances while on loan from Polish side FC Belchatow during the 2008-09 season. But for Honduras he is one of their star performers having bagged 31 goals in 69 games. Time for the real Carlo Costly to stand up.

It is a little overcast here but at 9am it was 85F. I went running and my time was 20% slower. The fatigue starts kicking in and the body temperature starts going up. You become lethargic and that will be a factor.

Kenny Jarvis, external: Roy Hodgson pretends to promote youth, but when push comes to shove, he'll revert back to type.

David Judson, external: Danny Welbeck equals the new James Milner, a hard worker who gives his all. But is he good enough?

David Harney, external: For the Italy game, Jack Wilshere should start instead of Jordan Henderson. Wilshere gives more flair and penetration.

I was out in Miami on Thursday and I bumped into Roy Hodgson. He was walking to a fans forum. We stopped and had a quick chat. He was very pleasant - not a problem. When he is relaxed and in a safe environment, he is a completely different person.

But he is England manager, he is under pressure. Every person that gets to the top of their profession has an edge. You need that ability to be ruthless.

A lot has been made of Roy Hodgson being irritable, but he was quite jovial when he was asked about it in the new conference on Friday. Laughing, he said 'I'm always irritable'. He did about 90 minutes with the media. On top of that he did a fans forum for two hours on Thursday. Fabio Capello wouldn't have done that four years ago.

  18. Will app equal a happy World Cup for England?published at 21:02 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

It's not that long ago since England's players were handed a folder containing pieces of paper about their opponents. But times change and so does the method used to swat up on teams.

Roy Hodgson's players have been presented with iPads loaded with with special apps, external containing all the individually tailored information they need on opponents they are likely to face in Brazil. Steven Gerrard, for example, will have info on his particular tablet showing how Italy usually operate and the midfielders he is expected to face in Manaus in the opening Group D game.

It has been designed and compiled by Andy Scoulding, the FA's head of performance analysis, together with his team of assistants. Scoulding created something similar for the qualifying campaign but has produced an updated version for the World Cup finals hoping players will digest the details in their own time at the hotel.

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Miami

England manager Roy Hodgson is fielding a side with a distinct World Cup look, with only Wayne Rooney surviving from the starting line-up against Ecuador.

Will Jordan Henderson keep his place alongside captain Steven Gerrard and will the likes of Danny Welbeck and Adam Lallana fight off the claims of Raheem Sterling when England face Italy? It may only be a preparation warm-up, but plenty riding on this one for those two.

The vibe coming out of the England camp is brilliant. I really hope that the feel-good factor continues long into the tournament. But these friendlies are a complete nuisance - get through them injury-free and get out to Brazil and get the show started. That's all players are thinking.
