Back in September 1989, Black Box were topping the charts with 'Ride on Time', Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was well on its way to becoming the highest-grossing film of the year and Jeremy Paxman was just weeks away from making his debut on Newsnight.

Liverpool were also beginning to emerge as title challengers once again following a 9-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Anfield which saw eight different players on the scoresheet. How the red half of Merseyside could do with a repeat of that scoreline tonight as they try and reel in Manchester City's goal difference...

"Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is in relaxed mood as he arrives at Selhurst Park, stopping to pose for pictures and sign autographs for a group of Crystal Palace fans in one corner of the stadium.

"Rodgers knows victory is essential here tonight to keep the pressure up on Manchester City ahead of their game against Aston Villa on Wednesday. City are in the driving seat but Rodgers's side can return to the top of the Premier League if they avoid defeat tonight - but Palace under Tony Pulis are experts at making life difficult even for the most illustrious opposition."

It's an inability to break down a stubborn defence which is perceived to have cost Liverpool when they were beaten by Chelsea in a potentially decisive match at Anfield last time out. Reds manager Brendan Rodgers criticised the tactics employed by Jose Mourinho in that game and, in the build-up to tonight's clash at Selhurst Park, he has pledged to continue trying to win matches "the Liverpool way".

"We ran out of patience in the Chelsea game and that's something we will work on," said Rodgers. "One of the beauties of this season is that success has come in a manner that's attuned to the Liverpool way and we aim to play winning football but also to play in a style that's synonymous with this football club."

  13. Chelsea to go shopping?published at 18:45 British Summer Time 5 May 2014

Speaking of Chelsea, they will be hoping for some catastrophic slips from both Liverpool and Manchester City in the final week of the season after their draw with Norwich on Sunday. The little horse appears to have stumbled towards the finishing line, and manager Jose Mourinho says his side need to sign a "killer" striker in the summer to ensure such slips don't happen again next season.

"We don't have the kind of striker able to, in a short space, to make an action, to score a goal, to open the gate," Mourinho said. "Against teams that are more defensive, more aggressive, more worried about trying to keep a clean sheet than really to play, we keep saying the same."

Who might Mourinho be targeting? Costa? Cavani? Anyone else whose name begins with a C?

  14. FA Youth Cup finalpublished at 18:43 British Summer Time 5 May 2014

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

It's not just about Liverpool and Crystal Palace tonight though, because it's the second leg of the FA Youth Cup final between Chelsea and Fulham. Heading into tonight's match at Stamford Bridge, Fulham lead 3-2 thanks to strikes from Moussa Dembele, Emerson Hyndman and Cameron Burgess at Craven Cottage.

I know what you're thinking...Moussa Dembele? Yep, Fulham have another midfielder by that name and haven't resigned their former hero from Spurs and added a few years to his birth certificate! Stick with what you know and all that.

Commentary from the match will be on 5 live sports extra from 19:40 BST, simulcasted with BBC Radio London.

Oh yes, goals are trading at their highest ever price in this Premier League season. They are more valuable than gold heading into the final week of the campaign.

Let's not rule Chelsea out of the title race just yet, but these next two midweek games at the top of the table could be critical. Liverpool visit Crystal Palace tonight before Manchester City host Aston Villa on Wednesday. With both sides locked on 80 points and with just two games left in the season, it could all come down to goal difference - which currently favours Manchester City, 59 to 50.

Prospectors, prepare for a goal rush.
