  • Qualification now out of England's hands

  1. Can England go out?published at 18:53 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

A reminder for England fans that even in defeat to Uruguay tonight, qualification is possible.

There are presently 81 different permutations for Group D.

Should England lose to Uruguay in Sao Paulo, they will need Italy to beat Costa Rica on Friday.

Then England must overcome Costa Rica next Tuesday and hope Italy simultaneously defeat Uruguay.

If level, goal difference splits teams, then goals scored, finally results and goals in games involving the teams concerned.

Should England draw tonight, they would finish level with Uruguay at worst with victory against a Costa Rican side beaten by Italy.

If England win, a draw against Costa Rica could be enough, depending on goal difference.

BBC Sport's Ben Smith in Recife
    BBC Sport

"All eyes may be on Sao Paulo for England versus Uruguay but in Recife, Italy and Costa have been gearing up for their Group D clash on Friday by training at Arena Pernambuco.

"Mario Balotelli has been speaking and when asked about winning the World Cup, he said: "I don't want to be a superstar, I want to win the World Cup. For a footballer, I think it's the biggest thing there is. It is better than winning the Golden Ball or any other competition."

"Italy's captain and goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon did train today but manager Cesare Prandelli was guarded when asked about his fitness. "We'll wait until tomorrow and make a decision in the morning."

Former Liverpool and Scotland defender Alan Hansen
    MOTD analyst

"I thought England played quite well offensively against Italy. But with two holding players and pushing everyone forward puts a lot of pressure on the back four. Playing Rooney wide on the left was crazy.

"If you play him wide on the left he will always come inside but defensively he got himself in a bad position a few times. There is massive pressure on Rooney in this game, if he doesn't perform everyone will be talking about him.

"I think England can get out of this group. I don't think it is a great group at all."

How are we all holding up? I woke up fairly positive but I'm getting more and more pessimistic the closer we get. It's a familiar feeling...

  16. Postpublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

BBC Sport's Chris Bevan in Rio

"Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis has a pretty good record against Luis Suarez down the years and I caught up with him in Rio today to ask him how England should try and deal with the Uruguay striker.

"Pulis told BBC Sport: "Luis loves to run at people and your defenders have to be ready for that. The important thing is to try to stop him getting one-on-one with you.

"But he has got such great balance that is easier said than done. People talk about everything he has got technically and don't mention his balance. He can come off one side, his right or left at full pace so well that he leaves people for dead.

"At times he is unplayable and England will hope he is not going to have one of those days because if they do, his awareness or ability means he is either creating or scoring goals."
