"England have to play the same way they played against Italy. I thought they played well in that game, especially Raheem Sterling, Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge. Wayne Rooney played well at points but he didn't take his chances well. England just have to do the same but a little bit more."

  2. Postpublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty in Sao Paulo

"Big opportunity for Wayne Rooney, who is filling a more central role today. Manager Roy Hodgson has shown great faith in him by switching Raheem Sterling, one of the big successes of the defeat against Italy.

"Rooney is still seeking his first goal at a World Cup - and there would be no finer time to break that duck than today."

  5. Who nicked our spread?published at 18:12 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

We all like our home comforts.

A jar of dulce de leche

If you've ever taken HP sauce or baked beans to Benidorm with you - and don't pretend you haven't - then you will have sympathy for the Uruguay squad after Brazilian officials confiscated 39kg (86lb) of caramel spread from them.

The spread, called dulce de leche, is extremely popular in Uruguay but the Brazilian authorities said that as it was made with milk, it needed sanitary documentation which was lacking.

    What a nightmare.

Will a lack of toffee sauce slow the Uruguayans down tonight?

England did win that game in 2002 against Argentina of course, new Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino gave away a cheap penalty and David Beckham buried it.

Another soft penalty decision this evening would go down well in England.

  7. Postpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Former England international Danny Mills
    BBC Radio 5 live

"There should be no reason why the England players shouldn't be at their fittest. I assume they will have all since recovered, but I was a little worried to see five or six England players go down with cramp in the opening match - while not a single Italian did.

"It will have taken two or three days to recover but they should be ready and raring to go. Once the game starts they will forget about everything else and give it everything they have got.

"This game is a little bit like the Argentina match in 2002, in that it is a game England go into knowing that they have to win."

We expect that Wayne Rooney will keep his place in the England attack this evening, but his record of no goals in World Cup finals will continue to be a distraction until he finds the net.

In fact, for all his goals in an England shirt, there could be an argument that he hasn't scored many big ones since his breakthrough at Euro 2004.

Countries Wayne Rooney has scored competitive goals against:

Macedonia, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Croatia, Estonia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Andorra, Bulgaria, Ukraine, San Marino, Poland, Montenegro.

Can he add Uruguay to that list?

  9. Postpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

On Luis Suarez starting: "I wouldn't like to be a defender playing against him. Knowing how good he is, it is already playing on your mind."

  12. Postpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Former England international Chris Waddle
    BBC Radio 5 live

"We need Wayne Rooney to hit the sort of form we know he's capable of. I know he's done a lot of running but is it in the right areas? I'd rather him do less running and have more energy on the ball to find passes and have strikes on goal.

"That's the problem for me. When you are struggling as a striker, after not scoring in the first game, you try and work harder for the team and that is to the detriment of scoring goals."

  13. Klose to the recordpublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

Wayne Rooney is the top scorer in England's squad, with 39 goals in 93 games.

    Top scorers for England

He is only 10 behind Sir Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record, so he is an automatic pick. Right?

Well Germany leave Miroslav Klose on the bench. And he's got 69 goals for them...

He's had a decade in the spotlight but Wayne Rooney has reached new levels of coverage in the past few weeks.

He started wide on the left against Italy, as Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling impressed in the central, 'number 10' role.

Rooney made England's goal for Daniel Sturridge but missed a good chance late in the second half and so far this week the newspapers have spent every day discussing where he should play. Or if he should play at all.

England's number 10 is the number one talking point...

England women have wrapped up a 2-1 win over Ukraine but Natasha Harding has scored a late hat-trick to earn Wales a 3-0 win over Belarus to prevent Mark Sampson's team securing a place for World Cup 2015 today. They need one point from their remaining two matches to get through.

"There was a lot of pressure on Joe Hart at Manchester City but he has proved in the last six months what a top keeper he is. When you have a confident keeper behind you, it gives you confidence as a back four. It bodes well because it gives the team in front so much more confidence.

"This is always the game I thought England would win and I haven't seen anything to change my mind."

England goalkeeper Joe Hart has been speaking to BBC Sport ahead of tonight's match with Uruguay.

On the opening match against Italy: "We had the three best chances I'd say. Raheem Sterling has really stood out for me. I think he's a fantastic player. I could name a lot but I really think he's a special player."

On being dropped by Manchester City earlier this season: "I don't really like to talk about it like It's a part of my life over, it's a part of my life that could easily happen again. It could easily happen on Thursday. I'm very much aware of that and of the position I've got to be in in my head to take the good, the bad and even when no one is interested.

"Hurt doesn't drive me on. To be involved in this tournament for my country drives me on. The people back home drive me on and playing for England in a World Cup drives me on."

On his training at the tournament: "We try to cover all bases, short, sharp shots and we are very aware that people are going to look to get it out of their feet and bang it at this World Cup. So it's important to always be set and expect the unexpected."
