"You're playing knockout football when you lose your first game. I think it's win at all costs today, a point will not be enough for England to go through because Costa Rica are no mugs, they're just as dangerous as Uruguay, but they are beatable.

"I would play exactly the same way as the Italian game. There was a lot that came out of that game that was positive. Just look to that. The confidence should be good because we did play well in the last game.

"At the 1990 World Cup Bobby Robson just told us to focus. We were there on merit. We'd been scoring goals and playing well. We were told just to concentrate on our individual jobs on the pitch - plain and simple."

    Uruguay v England

After the heat and humidity of Manaus it's a lot more British in Sao Paulo, as Dan Roan and co are finding out.

BBC Weather tell us that "it will be cloudy and cool with perhaps a little drizzle but winds will stay light" for tonight's game. Perfect.

"England will hope their defence's familiarity with Luis Suarez from the Premier League will help them cope with the Liverpool striker in Sao Paulo today.

"Manager Roy Hodgson said: "We're aware that one player can be very important but, as has rightly been said, it is not as if we're going into the unknown.

"We know how good he is. We know what he can do and our players will have to make certain, like they do when they play against Liverpool, that they deal with it."

As it stands England's women are heading to the 2015 World Cup. Mark Sampson's side lead Ukraine 2-1 and if Wales, who are currently goalless, fail to beat Belarus, England are through.

England took a 2-0 half-time lead through Casey Stoney and Eniola Aluko before pulled one back just after the hour. There is around 10 minutes remaining in Lviv.

BBC Sport's David Ornstein in Rio

"It's been a wet and muggy start to the day in Rio, but that has done little to dampen the sense of optimism among the England fans taking exclusions to see Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer.

"A couple of guys I met seemed full of nerves - wrongly thinking England will be eliminated if they lose to Uruguay - but quietly confident that Roy Hodgson's men have enough quality in them to get the job done."

"Canvassed a group of England fans at our hotel this morning and every one was confident of an England victory - until you mentioned the name Luis Suarez and then the mood darkened just slightly.

"This shows you the sort of psychological impact he could have on this World Cup game and it was no coincidence England captain Steven Gerrard kept emphasising that he believes the team that defends best will win. He knows, watching from very close quarters, the damage his Liverpool team-mate can do."

Uruguay present one of the "hardest matches in the country's history" and are historically "as tough as hell", says 1966 World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton

"I think we've got a good set of players this year," he tells Channel 4 Racing. "Probably the best we've had of the last decade. They've got an unbelievable history to live up to which is hard.

"You have to have the fearless type of players at international level who can go that little bit further than you've ever been before.

"We have some of those younger players and I think they'll be ok tonight. We have to be in there, it's unthinkable to think we cannot go forward. It's the type of thing you live and die for and I really hope we do the best we can."

    Former England defender Phil Neville
    MOTD analyst

"Against Italy we played the counter-attack system through Raheem Sterling, but now Wayne Rooney will be back in his best position. He will drop into midfield, thicken us up and allow Steven Gerrard to get on the ball more because we will cause Uruguay problems in midfield. Rooney has played more centrally before and that is his best position. It will also allow Leighton Baines to go forward which we didn't see against Italy.

"Uruguay are a massive threat - their front three are their best three players in the team.

"I spoke to Diego Forlan yesterday and he thinks that Uruguay will be better suited to playing England than Costa Rica because they can hit us on the counter-attack. They've got Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez who the England players know all about."
