"It's one of those things. I don't think there was any intent. The referee should have stamped out the bad tackles earlier in the game.

"It's a disaster for Brazil - Neymar is the one person in the Brazil team that can create that piece of magic to win a game."

  2. Neymar outpublished at 20:40 British Summer Time 5 July 2014

    Alan Hansen
    BBC Sport

"Neymar being ruled out is bad for the tournament, terrible for Brazil and devastating for the boy himself. Last night in the first half was the best I've seen Brazil play and it came through him and it was the first time I thought they might go on to win the tournament.

"He's unlucky because 99 times out of 100 the guy who gets the knee in the back is able to get up and get on with the game."

Should English players 'dive' more frequently? Or does it drive you up the wall?

Sam, Somerset: Sam Wallace is wrong, Danny Murphy right. Our contempt for diving in this country is something to be proud of. Does Wallace really think its worth giving up this trait to get a round or two further in the World Cup? Shame.

Clyde:, external If cheating is the norm now, count me out.

Rastamadeus FC:, external Let's not pretend English players don't dive, please. Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young are repeat offenders. Even our captain Steve Gerrard does it!

Alan Durden:, external England need to concentrate on scoring more not diving more!

We are half an hour away from kick-off in Salvador, the final quarter final of the 2014 World Cup.

The Dutch players look incredibly relaxed, lots of laughing and joking from the players as they complete their warm up. The Oranje are all in Orange tonight.

Will we see a vintage display?

  10. Can you sign this Arjen?published at 20:28 British Summer Time 5 July 2014

We have been critical of players swapping shirts at half-time of games during the World Cup, but maybe Costa Rica's Michael Barrantes has an excuse tonight. He called his son Arjen last year in honour of the flying Dutchman Arjen Robben and he will be in trouble if he doesn't get his shirt.

Heroes once upon a time, now equals.

"I never could dive, I just never knew how because I was never taught it. You cannot doubt Arjen Robben's ability, he is one of the best players in Europe. But if I was his friend or family member I would be embarrassed by it. It is a disgrace what he does - winning games through diving and cheating.

"I am a huge advocate for keeping the integrity and honesty of our domestic league, and that is why it is important we stamp it out. I'd like to see sterner punishments for it."

Independent chief football correspondent Sam Wallace: "I think Arjen Robben is a great player, I think he deceived Rafael Marquez to earn the penalty against Mexico but that is the way the game is played now. Robben is the ultimate modern player.

"An attacker shouldn't make it easy for the referee to ignore him and if you touch him in the box he goes down. I don't know when we are going to learn in this country but when Daniel Sturridge gets an elbow across the neck from Diego Godin, who is on a yellow card, and doesn't go down, for me it's one of the shortcomings of this England team and it happens every four years."

  15. Never beat Navaspublished at 20:19 British Summer Time 5 July 2014

If Costa Rica are to make it through tonight then goalkeeper Keylor Navas will need to have a stormer.

Luckily for the Ticos, 'stormer' has been Navas's default setting in the tournament so far. He made two or three brilliant saves in the second-round win over Greece, and then capped it off with the match-winning penalty save in the shootout.

He has saved 87.5% of the shots he's faced at the World Cup so far, making 14 saves.

The 27-year-old is likely to leave Levante this summer and has a buyout clause of £8m. Sign him up!

"I think Costa Rica's luck could just run out tonight. Their only hope is to keep tight, stay deep and play on the counter. It could be a question of how long it takes for the Dutch to break them down. But my old team-mate Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell both have the ability to score great goals for Costa Rica.

"Netherlands might be thinking their name is on the trophy because they're lucky. The win against Mexico will have put a spring in their step. I would imagine they are thinking that as long as they play to their abilities they will be in the semi-final against Argentina."

    Davor Suker, what a player.

I would probably describe myself as a fan. Loved that chip over Peter Schmeichel in 1996.

I'm not in the same ballpark when it comes to being a fan though as this guy.

    Lost it. Absolutely lost it...

One of the great World Cup shocks came back in 1998 when Croatia, who had only been in Fifa for five years following independence, stunned Germany 3-0.

Davor Suker, who went on to win the Golden Shoe with six goals, added a late third after strikes from Goran Vlaovic and Robert Jarni.

Croatia went on to lose 2-1 to eventual winners and hosts France in the semi-finals, although they finished third by beating Netherlands in the play-off.

Suker said: "Of all the unimportant things in the world, football is the most important. The charm is that a small country can beat a major one. We proved it and people respected us ever since."
