  3. PENALTY APPEAL

    Big shout for a penalty as Emmanuel Riviere's shot strikes the arm of Jose Fonte. Newcastle players are fuming and head straight to the referee, they want a penalty, referee is having none of it but he looks to have got that decision wrong.

  4. Shane Long is OK and off we go again. Mike Williamson creeps into the Newcastle attack, the hosts are throwing everything forward.

    Shane Long is down receiving treatment as the game ticks into the 90th minute, having taken a knock when challenging for the ball. Four minutes of stoppage time.

  6. There is a lot more zip about Newcastle but has it come too late? Remy Cabella tries to skip inside Harrison Reed but the Southampton man does well to shrug him off and end the attack.

  7. Matt Targett 's introduction means Southampton are shoring up their defence for the final few minutes, hoping to further stifle Newcastle's attack. It is a tactic that is inviting pressure at the moment though as Remy Cabella shoots wide, before Newcastle win a corner - their eighth of the game. It comes to nothing, but Newcastle retain possession.

    Eljero Elia has had a great game but he won't get the chance to score his hat-trick as Ronald Koeman decides to give Matt Targett a run out for the final few minutes.

    John Carver makes his final Newcastle change as Mike Williamson comes on for Paul Dummett. Williamson had a torrid time in the 4-0 defeat at Southampton back in September, can he make amends today?

    "A great ball in from Nathaniel Clyne, he has been impressive again today and did really well to dig out that cross. Graziano Pelle did everything right - it wasn't the easiest of headers - and beats Tim Krul, only to see the ball come back off the crossbar."

    Graziano Pelle must really hate the goalframe! Five times already this season he has hit the woodwork and he does so again with a header from Nathaniel Clyne's cross.

  13. Newcastle are yet to test Fraser Forster in the Southampton goal in this half but the arrival of Sammy Ameobi and Emmanuel Riviere has spiced things up a little bit. Ameobi harrying Southampton defenders out of position before Riviere wins a corner, but it comes to nothing. Just over 15 minutes for the hosts to find an equaliser...

    Newcastle need to do something and that something is make a double substitution. Sammy Ameobi and Emmanuel Riviere come on for Yoan Gouffran and Vurnon Anita. Riviere goes up top with Ameobi wide left. Can either of them mirror Shane Long's impact?

    Ade: Whatever it is that brought on the Danny Mills rant, and whether he has a point or not, it all looks very petty. Stuart Pearce may not be 'great', but how many mangers are? Danny just ends up looking a little bitter, and it doesn't help that a lot of people will always have a soft spot for Pearce. Images like the one of him after his penalty v Spain in 1996 don't leave your memory quickly.

    "In the first half we spoke about Graziano Pelle and his prowess in the air, all of a sudden Shane Long climbs to do the same. Daryl Janmaat has to put his foot through it though - stick it in the East Stand. It's a decent little finish from Eljero Elia, but Janmaat has to get the ball away."

    Again, slightly harsh on Newcastle after just about shading matters so far in this half. They try to hit back quickly but Steven Davis disrupts play with a bit of shirt pulling and he is booked as a result.

    What an impact from Shane Long! His first touch is to play the ball for Eljero Elia to race on to and his shot takes a slight deflection of Daryl Janmaat, but enough to take the ball beyond Tim Krul and into the net.

    It is actually a double substitution for Southampton as Jack Cork and Shane Long, who scored at Ipswich in the FA Cup in midweek, come on with James Ward-Prowse and Dusan Tadic making way.
