"I think that Arsenal will finish in the top four this season, but the fans want to see more than that. They want to see progression. And to get up there, to be challenging for Premier League titles, I think they need to make several world-class signings. They need a top-class defensive midfielder, a top-class centre-back and possibly a new goalkeeper."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger speaking to BBC Sport: "We missed some chances, but we needed to be patient and do the job in a professional way. If we could stop Hull scoring, you could see the second goal would come. It came late but we dealt with the situation."

On Alexis Sanchez: "Alexis Sanchez always gives you an incisive game and forces defenders into mistake. He is a dream for a manager. He always wants to play and that is what you want to see."

On Theo Walcott: "Theo has been out for a year and it won't come back all at once. But he made some good runs and came through 75 minutes unscathed."

On the fourth-round draw: "We want to play at home if possible but you cannot choose. we have good experience in the cup and let's see what happens."

Former England striker on BBC MOTD

"Arsene Wenger took a lot of pressure off himself and the club by winning the FA Cup. He signed some players in the summer but they never signed the commanding centre half they needed and I think that's why the pressure is now back on him now. But in his defence there are not a lot of top quality defenders out there."

Hull boss Steve Bruce: "If we're going to be honest Arsenal deserved to win. Unfortunately, up the top end of the pitch we were unable to create anything.

"The disappointing thing for me is that the first goal is the first we've conceded from a corner. We should be doing better than that. We battled on valiantly but we weren't quite good enough."

Away from the FA Cup, it's also a big night in Spain as La Liga gets back into action following their Christmas break.

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker, who scored the first goal, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a difficult game, obviously we were both finalists from last year and we had good memories from that day. It was a tough fight but I thought we deserved it. It was was close until Alexis scored.

"We were quite composed and deserved it. I am really proud of my team because no matter who plays we always stick together."

"I'm not a huge fan of Per Mertesacker. He is very slow on the turn if you have someone sharp and nippy in around him he struggles. I don't think he is commanding as he could be in his own box."

Per Mertesacker, speaking to BBC Sport, on Theo Walcott: "We need fit players, we have a couple of injuries but now he needs time and practice. It was a good game for him and we are absolutely delighted to have him back in the squad."

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott speaking to BBC Sport: "Hull had a game plan and passed the ball very well, but we got there in the end.

"It was nice for me personally to blow the cobwebs away after being out for a year to the day. It was nice to get involved and get a few chances. I wanted to put them away and it wasn't to be.

"I think mentally it is very hard when you are in the treatment room alone, when your team-mates are going out to train or going to the World Cup. But I had a lot going on in my life off the field which helped me keep going.

"Alexis Sanchez is a special player and it was nice to get on the pitch with him finally. I'm looking forward to plenty more."

Former Hull midfielder Jimmy Bullard on BBC One: "In the end it was a stroll in the park. Hull had a little bit of possession but no cutting edge.

"They went forward with only one or two players and you are not going to score against Arsenal if you do not commit the players."

Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live:

"Arsenal were never complacent but they were always comfortable. Hull just didn't have enough in midfield. It was Alexis Sanchez who was the spark and often the difference. Theo Walcott was quiet. I don't think Hull have put in a big enough effort. They will have to play with a bit more ambition and a bit more thrust."
